Clarkson Comes Up Short at Colgate

The struggles continued for the Clarkson University Hockey team at Starr Rink in Central, NY as the Golden Knights lost to Colgate 3-2 in ECAC Hockey action on Friday night.

The Knights, who saw their four-game league winning streak come to an end, stand at 15-8-2 overall and are now in fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with an 8-3 conference mark. Clarkson plays at Cornell in a 7:00 p.m. game at Lynah Rink on Saturday. The Green and Gold have gone winless (0-4-2) in their last six games on the Raiders' home ice and have not won in Hamilton since February 2007.

Colgate, which earned a one-goal win over Clarkson (4-3) at Cheel Arena on November 16, ran its unbeaten streak to six games, including five straight victories.

The Raiders (12-9-3, 7-4-1), who have started games strong during their unbeaten streak, jumped out to a quick lead against the Knights. Joe Wilson capitalized on a fortunate bounce off the back boards and scored at 4:17 for the game's first goal. The home team grabbed a 2-0 lead with a power-play marker from Tylor Spink at 12:23.

Clarkson rallied in the middle frame, scoring on the power play midway through the period and again late in the stanza in a 4-on-4 situation to tie the game at 2-2.

Sophomore defenseman Paul Geiger (Stouffville, ONT) started the Knights on their way in the period, connecting on a power-play shot from the blueline that found its way through traffic at 10:24 for his fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Jeff DiNallo (Aurora, ONT) and senior Will Frederick (Allison Park, PA) assisted on the man-advantage marker.

With just 22 seconds remaining in the period, Frederick tallied in his second consecutive game to make it 2-2 after 40 minutes. Senior Jarrett Burton (Echo Bay, ONT) stole the puck deep in the Colgate zone and fed Frederick at the bottom of the left circle, where his classmate flipped in his fifth goal of the season.

Colgate, however, would come away with the victory on Andrew Black's goal at 5:40 of the third.

The Knights pressured late, but could not come up with the equalizer.

Clarkson outshot Colgate 29-28. Freshman Steve Perry (Ligonier, PA), making his third consecutive start, recovered from a slow start and made several big stops over the final 40 minutes, and finished with 25 total.

Both teams went 1-of-4 on the power play.
