Knights Gain Key 4-2 Win Over Western Michigan

Behind another balanced scoring effort, a strong defensive showing and a solid outing on specialty teams, the Clarkson University Hockey team prevailed over Western Michigan 4-2 in non-league action before 2,687 fans at Cheel Arena on Friday night.

The Golden Knights of ECAC Hockey and the Broncos from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference will face off again on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to complete the weekend series.

Seniors Todd Christian and Pat Megannety, junior Jordan Boucher and sophomore Sam Vigneault scored the Clarkson goals and junior goaltender Steve Perry made 14 saves as the Knights improved their record to 4-1. The Green and Gold went 1-of-4 on the power play and killed off three of Western Michigan's (2-1-1) four man-advantage opportunities. Clarkson outshot the Broncos 30-16.

Tied 2-2 late in regulation, Vigneault swept in a loose puck at the side of the net while on the power play for the game-winner with 2:29 remaining. Boucher dug a puck from underneath a Western Michigan defenseman and slid a pass to Vigneault, who tallied his second goal of the season for the deciding score. Junior defenseman James de Haas started the play with a shot from the top of the slot that deflected off a Bronco player in front.

Megannety closed out the Knights' third win of the season at Cheel on an empty-net tally with 34 seconds left to seal Western Michigan's first loss of the year.

Clarkson controlled play for much of the opening 20 minutes, outshooting the visitors 9-2, but it was the Broncos who entered the first-period intermission with a 1-0 lead. Nolan LaPorte scored on a quick wrist shot from just outside the crease at 5:15 for the game's first goal.

The Knights wasted little time to take the lead in the middle frame, scoring a pair of goals nine seconds apart before the period was two minutes old.

Christian took a pass in the slot from sophomore Janick Asselin and buried his first goal of the season at 1:37. de Haas recorded his first assist of the game on the goal. At 1:46, moments after the ensuing faceoff, Boucher finished off a beautiful pass from along the right boards by sophomore Brett Gervais, knocking in his third goal of the season in front. Sophomore defenseman Kelly Summers also assisted.

Western Michigan tied the game midway through the period after a video review. Aidan Muir' shot rang off the pipes and just over the goal line at 10:52 while the Broncos were skating on a five-minute major power play, but was not ruled a goal until a stoppage in play and the officials had a chance to review the video.

The Broncos went on their fourth man-advantage opportunity of the game at 13:11 of the third period, but Clarkson killed it off to keep the game tied 2-2, setting the stage for Vigneault's game-winner.

Collin Olson made 26 saves in Western Michigan's net.
