Coleman Picked as Capital One Academic All-America of the Year for Baseball

There may have been an argument before, but after Tuesday's announcement, it's official: John Coleman is the most decorated student-athlete in the history of Clarkson University. The senior shortstop from the Golden Knights' Baseball team was awarded the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America of the Year in a second sport in 2015 as he headlined the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American team.

Coleman, who also earned the prestigious award in men's basketball this past February, is just the third student-athlete to be named Academic All-America® of the Year in two different sports in the same academic year, joining Drew Golz of Wheaton College (Illinois) who won the award in baseball (2012) and men's soccer (2011) and Cynthia Capp of West Virginia Wesleyan who earned the honor in volleyball (1990) and softball (1991). His selection to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America First-Team gives him five Academic All-America awards across the two sports since he became eligible as a sophomore in 2012-13.

The Capital One Division III Academic All-America ® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2014-15 Division III Academic All-America ® teams program.

Coleman entered his final semester with a 3.97 grade-point average in Mathematics and continued to excel in both the classroom and on the diamond. He was chosen as Liberty League Player of the Year in a second sport this spring after he finished in the top five in the conference in hitting (.437, second), on-base percentage (.525, third) and slugging (.605 , fourth), the only player in the league to do so. He struck for 14 extra-base hits overall and finished second in the league in triples with six and failed to reach base in only two of 32 contests. More importantly, Coleman once again provided some of the best defense in the country at shortstop, committing only six errors in 168 chances. He made just 10 errors in his final 73 career games at short. Not surprisingly, Coleman was named the Clarkson University Male Athlete of the Year for the second time in the school's awards this past April and he also earned Clarkson University Male Scholar Athlete of the Year honors.
