Big Effort in Second Half Lifts CU Women's Hoops to 67-61 Win Over Vassar

Potsdam, NY – The backcourt tandem of Madison Shea and Devin Sorell combined for 40 points as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team picked up a 67-61 win over Vassar in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League with the win, while Vassar fell to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Clarkson will take on Route 11 rival St. Lawrence University at Alumni Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Though Vassar held a significant edge on the boards in the first half (30-16), Clarkson was able to reduce that impact by forcing the Brewers into 14 turnovers. In the early going, Vassar's offense was running clean by getting past the Golden Knights' full-court press and that allowed the Brewers to push out to an early five-point lead (13-8) after a pair of free throws from Maddie Leong. A layup by Leong with less than a minute to go pushed the Brewers advantage to seven points, but Devin Sorell responded with a 3-pointer at the other end to pull the Knights back to within four. The second quarter was definitely less free on offense as the two teams combined for just 13 points after producing 32 cumulative points in the opening 10 minutes.

For Vassar, Ariella Rosenthal nearly produced a double-double in the first half with nine points and seven boards, while Rose Serafini also helped on the inside with seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Despite picking up two quick fouls in the first quarter, Madison Shea was able to produce eight first-half points and three steals, while Stephanie Grobe found her teammates around the court to the tune of four assists.

In the second half, Devin Sorell buried a 3-pointer to tie the game on the very first possession, but Vassar would not relinquish its lead, holding on to modest advantages through the majority of the third quarter. After a 3-pointer from Nicole Teta at the 2:20 mark, however, the Brewers went cold. A four-point advantage disappeared and became a two-point lead for the Knights at the end of three quarters, and Clarkson continued to make key shots, taking an 11-point lead (54-43) with 6:23 to go in the fourth. Clarkson held a solid lead for the rest of the game, though a lay in by Rose Serafini with 52 seconds to go brought the Brewers back within four (62-58). On the next possession, the Knights ran the shot clock down significantly and made the tactic pay off when Sorell buried a 3-pointer at the top of the key with 26 seconds left in the game.

Sorell finished with 21 points, going 7-for-12 from the field and 5-for-9 from beyond the 3-point arc, while Madison Shea chipped in a career-high 19 points (8-for-14 from the floor) with four assists and four steals. Ashley Loggins was a basket short of a double-double with eight points and 14 boards while Stephanie Grobe added in 11 points and nine assists.

For Vassar, Ariella Rosenthal was 11-for-22 from the field for a game-high 24 points. Serafini finished with eight points, 14 boards and five blocks, and Alex Moon dished out eight assists.
