CU Cross Country Preview - at NCAA Atlantic Regionals (11/12)

Any time it gets this late in the season, conditions for the Clarkson University Cross Country team and its opponents can go in many directions. Fortunately, the key direction for the NCAA Atlantic Regionals in 2016 is south. Rowan University serves as host this year, a school situated in Glassboro, NJ which is actually 20 miles south of Philadelphia, making the expected weather more hospitable than usual.

The Golden Knights will send a group of eight men and eight women to the course set near the Mason-Dixon Line, joining more than 40 other teams at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals. Only the elite will move on to the NCAA Championships the following week in Louisville, KY, with several individuals vying for the opportunity to join Pete Rickert, Alex Benway and Dan Fritz as student-athletes to reach the final race of the season.

As of late, sophomore Alison Davis has been Clarkson's top runner on either the men's or women's side, finishing in the top 15 at the Liberty League Championships in late-October to garner conference all-star status. Though the course at Seneca Lake State Park produced a slowing effect on the field due to conditions and the number of competitors, Davis is still averaging a 6:22 mile over the course of four 6,000-meter races, the distance that Saturday's course will cover. Though Davis competed at last year's regionals held at Geneseo, it is expected that she will finish much closer to the top than when she took 188th out of 266 runners in 2015. Freshman Kelley Hull has no NCAA Regional experience to fall back on, but she has consistently been Clarkson's second-best runner on the women's side, averaging just a 6:25 mile. Sophomore Sarah Duclos finished 82nd out of 266 runners at least year's regionals and again has been a solid performer for Clarkson in 2016, averaging a 6:34 mile. Freshmen Emilee Carpenter and Rachael Jones have also been in Clarkson's top five for most of the season, averaging a 6:35 and 6:36 mile in 6K events this season. The duo's collective times are actually only separated by a little more than seven seconds over 24 kilometers. That gap is even smaller among the final three competitors from Clarkson's contingent as sophomores Katie Ackner and Hannah Phillips, as well as freshman Ellen Jaworski are separated by an aggregate of just 4.35 seconds, with all three averaging a 6:48 mile.

On the men's side, Lukas Patrizio, like Davis, has emerged as the top runner for the Golden Knights in 2016. The senior from Port Chester, NY has averaged a 5:25 mile over five 8,000-meter events in 2016 with his two best performances coming in the last month, both at Seneca Lake State Park. Patrizio finished 118th out of 288 runners last year at Letchworth State Park. Junior AJ Beers took 101st at the same event in 2015 and is just two seconds slower than Patrizio with a 5:27 average mile. Classmate Kris Lizins has jockeyed back and forth all season, but seems to have settled into the number three spot for the Golden Knights, averaging a 5:30 mile. The fourth and fifth spots for Clarkson this year have been decidedly closer as senior Alexander DeWitt and sophomore Austin Smith are separated by just 15.3 seconds over a total of 40 kilometers, with each averaging 5:34 miles but DeWitt being a tick faster. DeWitt finished in the top half of competitors in 2015 at the regionals, taking 123rd overall, while Smith was in the bottom half at 176th. Senior Stephen Paddock is just a second slower than the above duo, averaging a 5:35 mile, while junior Jacob Erdman is running at a 5:38 clip and took 169th at the regionals in 2015. Junior Dennis Mooney got the nod for one of the final spots for the Golden Knights group of eight, averaging a 5:38 mile this season, though his time comes from a group of four races rather than five.
