CU Women's Hoops Drops 59-56 Decision at SLU

Canton, NY - A 3-pointer on the last possession of the game turned out to be the difference as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team came up on the short end of a close game for the first time in six weeks, falling 59-56 to St. Lawrence in Liberty League action Wednesday evening.

The Golden Knights saw their 14-game winning streak, the second-longest in school history, come to an end as the team fell to 19-5 overall and 12-3 in the Liberty League. St. Lawrence held on to its playoff hopes by improving to 16-8 overall and 9-6 in conference play.

The first half saw nine lead changes, though a last-second 3-pointer in the first half would prove a harbinger of things to come for St. Lawrence. Kaelyn Kohlasch broke a tie with her 3-pointer with two seconds to go in the first half, giving the Saints a 28-25 edge at the break. It would be more of the same in the second half as the teams went back and forth, claiming momentum briefly only to see it slip away with a run by the other team. St. Lawrence was up by nine (42-33) with 3:16 to go in the third quarter, but Clarkson went on a run of its own to end the third frame and at the start of the fourth, with back-to-back 3-pointers from Devin Sorell and Madison Shea giving Clarkson a two-point advantage with less than five minutes to go. Kohlasch tied the game up with a 3-pointer at 3:23 (53-53) and Jenny Scudder gave the Saints the lead again with 1:15 to go. Sorell responded with a 3-pointer 24 seconds later to tie the game up and it appeared as if the last shot might win the game. Clarkson had possession with less than 30 seconds to go after an Ashley Loggins steal, but following a missed jumper and an offensive rebound by Loggins, the senior forward was whistled for an offensive foul. That gave St. Lawrence possession with 14 seconds remaining and Jenny Scudder nailed a 3-pointer with three seconds to go to give St. Lawrence the win.

Devin Sorell finished with 15 points to lead Clarkson, while Madison Shea chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds. Stephanie Grobe also had 11 points, while Alyssia Marsal tossed in eight points, six boards and four assists. Ashley Loggins also produced six points, 12 rebounds and three steals.

The Saints couldn't have shot much better from the perimeter on Wednesday night, going 11-for-26 from beyond the 3-point arc, a far cry from the 1-for-17 effort they had against Clarkson on January 12th, the teams' first meeting. Kaelyn Kohlasch and Jenny Scudder scored 20 and 18 points, respectively, combining for a 9-for-14 rate at the 3-point line.
