Clarkson Opens 4-game League Road Trip

An impressive win to start the 2017 portion of the schedule has given the Clarkson University Hockey team some momentum as it looks forward to a full slate of ECAC Hockey games in the season's second half.  The Golden Knights will look to build upon their 6-1 non-league victory over Rensselaer in Lake Placid this past Saturday as they take to the road this weekend to start a four-game road trip. 

Guided by sixth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, Clarkson travels to New England this weekend to face off against Yale in New Haven on Friday and then takes the bus over to Providence, RI on Saturday to play at Brown. Game times are 7:00 p.m.

Clarkson, which snapped a three-game losing skid win the non-conference win over RPI, owns a 10-8-3 overall record and is in fifth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 5-3-1 league mark.

•    In the rivalry against Yale, which first began in in 1930, the Knights hold a commanding 72-38-8 lead. The teams are tied 1-1-3 over the past five games, including two consecutive ties in late November. The Bulldogs are on a current four-game unbeaten streak (1-0-3) in the series.
•    Clarkson owns a convincing 64-19-8 lead against Brown in their all-time series which first began in 1952. The Knights have won four of the last five games, including a 3-2 triumph at Cheel Arena on November 18. 
•    The Knights finished up non-league play with a 5-5-2 record. Clarkson went 4-3-1 against Hockey East foes, 0-2 against Big10 opponents and 1-0-1 in out-of-conference play against ECAC Hockey rivals. Clarkson was even in goals for (38) and goal against (38). The Green and Gold were 1-4 at home, 3-1-1 on the road and 1-0-1 on neutral ice in non-league action.
•    Clarkson has 13 games remaining in the regular season with eight on the road. Six of those games involved the Knights' three longest conference road trips of the year.  Clarkson plays at Yale and Brown this weekend, travels to Quinnipiac and Princeton on February 10-11 and closes out the regular season at Harvard and Dartmouth on February 24-25. The Green and Gold also have the short jaunt to Central NY to face Cornell and Colgate, historically its toughest road trip, on January 20-21. The Knights are 5-2-1 on the road.
•    The Knights, who last played in Potsdam on December 3, falling to Top-10 ranked Harvard 7-3, return to Cheel Arena for their next home game on January 27, hosting Union.
•    Clarkson's six goals on Saturday against RPI were its most in a single game since skating to a 6-2 victory over Western Michigan on October 24, 2015. The Knights' previous high for goals in a game this season was five when they defeated the Engineers 5-2 in Troy on November 11.
• Junior Sam Vigneault enjoyed a career night in Lake Placid on Saturday, figuring in on four of Clarkson's six goals, scoring twice and adding two assists to help lead the non-league win over RPI.  Vigneault is tied for the team lead in points with 18 on six goals and 12 assists. Vigneault was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week.
• Freshman Haralds Egle also had a big night on the Olympic ice at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena, scoring a career best two goals, both coming in a three-minute span late in the second period.  Through 17 games the Latvia native has tallied five goals and two assists.
• Both of junior Ben Dalpe's goals this season have come shorthanded. His second of the season capped off the Clarkson scoring on Saturday. The Knights are 7-0-0 all-time when Dalpe scores a goal.
• Freshman goaltender Jake Kielly has started 18 of Clarkson's first 20 games and posts a .915 save percentage and a 2.67 goals against average along with two shutouts. He was seconds away from posting his third shutout of the season before RPI spoiled the bid on Saturday, scoring with 11 seconds remaining.  
• Senior Jordan Boucher shares the Clarkson points lead with seven goals and 11 assists. Boucher leads all current Knights in career scoring with 60 points (24-36) through 98 games. 
• Freshman Devin Brosseau is third on the Green and Gold offensively with 16 points on five goals and 11 assists. He posts a +7 plus/minus rating. 
• Senior Troy Josephs, who sat out the game at Northeastern with an injury, has scored a team-high eight goals and has 15 points in 19 games. He recorded two assists in Saturday's win.  The Pittsburgh Penguins draft choice has 12 points (7-5) in his last 11 games. He leads the team in plus/minus at +8.
• After missing the first nine games of the season nursing an injury, defenseman Terrance Amorosa has made a big impact on the Knights' blueline as the Green and Gold have gone 7-3-2 with the junior back in the lineup. He has tallied two power-play goals and four assists through 12 games.  His started off the scoring in Saturday's win over RPI with the Knights' opening goal.
• Rookies Sheldon Rempal (5-8) and Nico Sturm (3-10) have 13 points apiece. 
•  Freshman Nico Sturm follows right behind with 12 points (3-9).  
• The Freshman Line centered by Sturm (3-8), left wing Brosseau (5-7) and right wing Rempal (5-7) has accounted for 13 goals and 22 assists over the past 18 games since skating together starting with the game at Providence (10/21).
• Clarkson's Class of 2020 is the top producing freshman class in ECAC Hockey and is tied for seventh overall in the NCAA, averaging 2.76 points per game.  The Knights' seven rookie skaters, and Kielly (one assist) have accounted for 34% of Clarkson's offense with 58 points on 20 goals and 38 assists. 
James de Haas leads the Knights in scoring from the blueline and rounds out Clarkson's double figure scorers with with 10 points on four goals and six assists. 
• Freshman defenseman Greg Moro boasts a +7 plus/minus rating.
• Clarkson is ninth in the country in penalty minutes, averaging 16.3 minutes per game.  The Knights' penalty kill is rated 25th in the nation at 84.1% (111-132). 
• The Knights' power-play is 33rd in Division I at 17.3% (18-104). Clarkson is 7-4-2 when it scores on the power play and 3-4-1 when it does not.
•  Clarkson is 8-3-2 when its scores first. 
•  Clarkson is tied for 24th in the PairWise Rankings.

Scouting Yale
Yale, guided by 12th-yer head coach Keith Allain, owns a 6-7-2 overall record and is tied for ninth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 2-5-1 league mark. The Bulldogs saw a two-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday with a 3-1 loss to Providence at Ingalls Rink. Yale is 3-4-0 at home this season. 

John Hayden, a Chicago draft choice, is Yale's leading goal scorer with 12 tallies to go along with seven assists. Joe Snively also has 19 points on eight goals and 11 assists. 

Patrick Spano has started 11 games in the Yale crease and posts a .894 save percentage and a 2.87 goals against average en route to a 5-4-2 record.

Scouting Brown
Guided by eighth-year head coach Brendan Whittet, Brown enters the weekend with a 3-11-1 overall record and holds an 11th-place 2-6 ECAC Hockey mark. The Bears, who host St. Lawrence on Friday, have lost two straight. In its last action Brown fell 7-4 to UNH at Meehan Auditorium on Sunday. The Bear's last victory was a 6-3 triumph at home over Rensselaer on December 10. The Bears are 2-4 at Meehan Auditorium. Sam Lafferty, a Pittsburgh draft choice, leads Brown in scoring with 22 points on five goals and 17 assists. Gavin Nieto has started 12 games in the Bears' crease and posts a .864 save percentage and a 4.29 goals against average en route to a 2-8 record. 

The Series:
In the rivalry against Yale, which first began in in 1930, the Knights hold a commanding 72-38-8 lead. The teams are tied 1-1-3 over the past five games, including two consecutive ties in late November. The Bulldogs are on a current four-game unbeaten streak (1-0-3) in the series. In their last meeting on November 25 at Notre Dame's Shillelagh Tournament, Sheldon Rempal and Troy Josephs scored the goals in a 2-2 draw, while Jake Kielly made 27 saves. The Knights advanced to the tournament championship game by winning a shootout.  On November 19, Yale tallied twice in the third period to gain a league point on the road with a 3-3 tie at Cheel. Aaron Thow, James de Haas and Nico Sturm scored the Clarkson goals. Kielly posted 33 stops.

Clarkson's last win in the series was a 1-0 shutout in Potsdam on January 24, 2015. Yale's last win in the series was a 3-1 triumph in New Haven on February 20 last season. de Haas (1-3), Brett Gervais (1-3) and Jordan Boucher (0-4) have a team-high four points each against the Bulldogs. A.J. Fossen and Thow both have two goals in the series. Kielly posts a .923 save percentage and a 2.31 GAA through two games of the series. Steve Perry has also played two games against Yale with a .875 save percentage, a 3.53 GAA and a 1-1 record.

Jake Kielly made 26 saves. The Bears snapped a five-game losing skid against the Green and Gold with a 5-2 victory in Providence on February 19 in their final meeting last season.  

Jordan Boucher (3-2) and James de Haas (1-4) have five points in the series. Kielly posts a .897 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average against the Bears. Steve Perry is 2-0 against Brown with a .936 save percentage and a 1.74 GAA.
