Knights Score 22 More Runs in Second Day Split Versus Wisconsin foes

Auburndale, FL – On its third and fourth nine-inning games in the first two days of the season, the Clarkson University Baseball team did its best to support its pitchers with plenty of offense and the Golden Knights were able to claim a split against Lawrence University and Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Clarkson dropped its opener with a 7-6 loss to Lawrence, but roared out in front with nine runs in the top of the second to win a 16-14 slugfest against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

In the first game of the day, the offenses were off and running in the first few innings only to be slowed later on. The Vikings scored three in the top of the first as Andrew Lauber delivered a one-out double to put Lawrence up 1-0 and he was immediately followed by a two-run double from Travis Weber to make it 3-0 before Clarkson got its first hacks. The Knights responded with similar production, though, as senior Dom Pirro homered as the second batter for Clarkson to make it 3-1. A pitch then hit Chris Miller and Joe Fraser reached on a walk to put a pair of runners on, setting the stage for another home run, this time from junior Justin Judson.

Lawrence responded with a run of its own in the top of the second when Patrick McDonnell homered for the Vikings, but Fraser delivered a two-out double to plate Miller in the bottom of the third to return the advantage to Clarkson (5-4). A sac bunt squeeze tied the game in the top of the fifth, but the offenses went silent for nearly three innings. In the bottom of the eighth, it appeared as if Clarkson scored what would appear to be the game-winning run when Pirro led off with a single and was pushed around to third with back-to-back walks to Miller and Brad Pearson. Fraser then sent Pirro scampering home with a sacrifice fly for a 6-5 Clarkson lead. That lone run by the Knights wouldn't be enough, however, as Lawrence was able to pick up two runs in the top of the ninth. Nolan Spencer led off with a triple and stole home following the second out of the inning. With the game tied, Matthew Holliday singled and advanced to second on a passed ball, allowing Lauber an opportunity to drive Holliday in with a single. Clarkson went quietly in the ninth for its second loss of the season.

Judson finished 3-for-4 with three runs driven in on his homer, while Pirro was 2-for-5. Chris Miller scored a pair of runs and was just 1-for-2, but reached base in his other two plate appearances.

In game two, the Knights fell behind by two in the bottom half of the first but ripped the Titans for nine runs in the top of the second. Cam Bando led off the second with a triple and came home on an RBI single from Joe Fraser. Fraser then circled the bases on an error, but Clarkson then received six more run-scoring hits before the inning ended. Brad Pearson drove in two with a double, while the rest came on singles from Nate Burns, Chris Miller, Will Coleman, Ben Knauf and Joe Stockman.

Neither team was done on offense. The Titans picked up a run in the bottom of the second and another in the bottom of the third, but that wasn't enough to keep pace with the Knights. Clarkson scored three in the top of the third. Miller reached on an error and to score Pearson, while Bando tripled again to drive in another run before scoring himself on a Will Coleman single. Two more runs came around for Clarkson in the fourth thanks to another Wisconsin-Oshkosh error, making it 14-4. The Titans wouldn't go away despite the deficit, chipping away with four in the bottom of the fourth, two in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the bottom of the seventh, making it 14-11. Clarkson tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the top of the eighth as Dom Pirro homered for the second time on the day and Ben Knauf drew a bases loaded walk to drive in Clarkson's 16th run. Those runs proved important as the Titans strung enough singles together to score three in the bottom of the eighth. However, Dom Pirro came in from centerfield and induced a double play to mitigate the damage. Pirro then struck out two and ended the game with a fly out to earn the save.

The Golden Knights did their damage without the benefit of much slugging. Of Clarkson's 26 hits, just four went for extra bases. Four players produced four hits as Will Coleman went 4-for-5, Cam Bando was 4-for-6 with a pair of triples, and both Brad Pearson and Dom Pirro went 4-for-7. Joe Fraser also was 3-for-5 and Nate Burns went 3-for-6. Each Clarkson starter drove in at least one run while only one failed to score a run.
