Clarkson Caps Florida Trip with Split Against Hamilton

On the final day of the trip to Florida, the Clarkson University Baseball team split a doubleheader with Hamilton College in Auburndale, Florida.

Clarkson finishes the trip down south with a 3-5 record.

In the opening game of the doubleheader, Clarkson could not get the offense going and fell to the Continentals 3-0.

Hamilton pushed past a single run in the second, third, and fourth innings for the only scoring in the game. Ryan Wolfsberg had an RBI single for the Continentals and Craig Sanford and Chris Collins each had a sacrifice fly.

The Golden Knights were only able to muster two hits in the game. Cam Bando led off the second inning with a single and Dom Pirro did the same in the fourth inning. While both moved up to second base, neither got any further.

Nate Burns made his first collegiate pitching start for Clarkson, allowing three runs on eight hits in three and one third innings. Mark Connor relieved Burns and allowed three hits in two and two thirds scoreless innings. For Hamilton, Finlay O'Hara threw a complete game shutout with two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Green and Gold scored four runs in the first inning and never trailed again en route to a 7-2 victory.

Will Coleman led the first inning off with a single through the left side followed by Pirro singling to right field. Chris Miller then dropped a single between the right fielder and first baseman to load the bases full of Golden Knights with no one out. Bando bounced a single over the third baseman's head and down the left field line to score Coleman and Pirro. Brad Pearson then laid down a bunt to advance Miller and Bando, but Pearson ended up reaching base as well when the Hamilton pitcher made an error. Zack Riccardi kept the train moving with a single to left field to score Miller and get Riccardi his first collegiate RBI. The fourth run scored when Bando scampered home on a passed ball.

The Continentals got two runs back in the fourth inning. Kenny Collins made it to third all on his own as he reached first on a bunt single, advancing to second on a passed ball, and then stole third. Collins scored when his brother Chris Collins doubled down the left field line. Collins then stole third base as well and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Haser.

Clarkson got those two runs back in the fifth and then added another insurance run in the sixth. Bando, Pearson, and Riccardi all walked with two outs in the fifth. Bando and Pearson came into score when Ben Knauf reached on a Hamilton error. Mike Messier led off the sixth with a single and then moved to second on a balk. Messier advanced to third on a Coleman sacrifice bunt and then Pirro
drove him in with a double to deep right field.

Those runs were more than enough for the Clarkson pitchers. Ryan Riley pitched the first four innings and allowed two runs to go with five strikeouts. Ted Wilson threw two scoreless innings and Coleman closed out the final inning without allowing a run.

Clarkson will head back north, but will have some time before games start again. Clarkson's next game will be on April 1st at the University of Rochester.
