Knights Revive Winning Ways in Four-Set Win Over SLU

Box Score
Canton, NY – A rocky start on offense was weathered thanks to some outstanding defense as the Clarkson University Volleyball team rallied from a one-set deficit to beat St. Lawrence 3-1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-16) in Liberty League action Tuesday night at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights ended a four-game skid, edging back over .500 at 8-7 and winning their first game in league play to move to 1-2. St. Lawrence fell to 12-6 and 0-3. Clarkson continues its road trip with matches at conference foes Bard and Vassar this weekend.

Although the Knights jumped out to an early lead (9-4), Clarkson was undone by 11 unforced errors in the opening set, including seven hitting errors that sailed out of bounds. Midway through the set, St. Lawrence turned a five-point deficit into a five-point lead, rolling out to that advantage at 19-14. From there, despite Clarkson's excellent defense that produced 34 digs in the set, St. Lawrence was able to get a few clutch kills down the stretch to take the first game.

Set two saw more outstanding defense from Clarkson (31 digs) and the ability to keep points alive helped Clarkson slowly pull away from the Saints. Up by just one (11-10) after a St. Lawrence kill. Clarkson rode a solid run of offense from Maddie Bredehoeft (four kills) and Rachel Reusch (two kills, one solo block) to run away for a 25-17 win.

In the third set, Clarkson dug itself an early hole with several unforced errors that came so quickly that the Knights were down 7-1 in just over a minute. The margin expanded to eight on two occasions (11-3, 14-6) before Clarkson started to get things right. Rachel Reusch recorded a kill, a solo block, another kill, and another solo block to get the Knights back within four and Clarkson rallied all the way back to tie it with four more points. The two teams were still tied at 19-19 when the Knights went on another run, receiving two kills from Reusch and one each from Kendall Cheval and Savannah Peters, along with an ace by Kate Isaksen.

Game number four saw the two teams exchange modest runs in the early going, but Clarkson found a spark at the midway point, turning a 12-11 lead into a six-point advantage thanks to three kills from Bredehoeft and back-to-back block assist points with Gillian Kurtic contributing on both. Just when St. Lawrence might have picked up a second wind, Reusch scored two more kills and then Cheval and Bredehoeft put the set away with kills of their own.

Reusch finished with 20 kills and just four errors on 37 swings for a .432 hitting percentage, also adding in six total blocks, including four solo efforts. Bredehoeft had a double-double with 13 kills and 23 digs and Savannah Peters added eight kills. Kate Isaksen contributed 33 digs, leading the team in that category as the squad produced 113 digs overall. Amanda Collins ran the offense to the tune of 42 assists.

For St. Lawrence, Natalie Piper had 12 kills and 19 digs and Grace Kelly added nine kills 20 digs.
