Knights Go Cold in Second Half in Loss to Skidmore

Potsdam, NY – A 30-point fourth quarter by Skidmore allowed the Thoroughbreds to pull away from the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team down the stretch, as the Golden Knights fell 74-52 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, while Skidmore moved to 2-5 and 1-1. Clarkson will continue its brief run of league games on Tuesday when it travels to face St. Lawrence.

Skidmore entered Saturday's contest averaging just 41.5 points per game and shooting only 27.0% from the floor, but the Thoroughbreds put up solid offensive numbers for any team, shooting 48.3% from the field for 74 points. Its previous high in six games in the 2018-19 season was 55 points.

It was not Skidmore that raced out to a lead in the early going, as Clarkson scored 10 points in the first four-plus minutes, thanks to 3-pointers from Carly Assimon and Rachel Marion, before the Thoroughbreds picked up their first points. Clarkson extended its advantage to 11 on two separate occasions, again on 3-pointers from Assimon and Hannah Earl, but the Golden Knights' shooters went cold after scoring 18 points in the first quarter.

As Clarkson struggled to make shots, Skidmore steadily got back into the game, pulling to within one on a jumper from Mary Kate Palleschi (18-17). The Thoroughbreds tied the game at 20-20 at the 6:50 mark, but Clarkson regained its advantage with an Emma Buonanno jumper and a 3-pointer from Earl at the 3:56 mark. Skidmore stuck close, however, as a layup from Kate McCarney gave Skidmore the lead for the first time at 28-26, and a jumper from Haley English with nine seconds left maintained the Thoroughbreds two-point advantage at the break.

Although Assimon hit a 3-pointer at the 7:28 mark in the third to put the Knights up by three, Skidmore led for most of the third quarter. The Knights stuck close, trailing by three (44-41) early in the fourth, but the Thoroughbreds continued to hit shots in the fourth, including three 3-pointers to take a 12-point lead. Clarkson employed a press to get back into the game briefly, cutting the margin to seven, but that was the last gasp as Skidmore's hot shooting (53.3% in the second half) allowed the Thoroughbreds to hold off the Knights. Clarkson shot just 29.0% in the second half.

Hannah Earl led the way for the Golden Knights, scoring 15 points with seven rebounds. Carly Assimon tossed in 13 points and Molly Stewart contributed nine points. Kati Gotch produced seven points, nine rebounds and four assists.

For Skidmore, Jessica Centore shot 7-for-11 from the floor for 15 points and also grabbed a team-best nine rebounds while adding in four assists and four steals. Haley English chipped in 13 points and Sydney Tsutsui added 11 points. Kate McCarney proved a sparkplug off the bench for the Thoroughbreds, scoring 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting in 23 minutes of action.
