Clarkson Hockey Back in Lake Placid for ECAC Hockey Championship Tr.

Back to the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament for the first time in 11 years, Clarkson University will be striving for the sixth conference tournament crown in the program's 96-year history. The Golden Knights advance to Lake Placid after dispatching Colgate over the weekend in a hard-fought quarterfinal round at Cheel Arena.  

After losing Friday's Game 1, 2-1, in the best-of-three game series, Clarkson battle back to shut out the Raiders 3-0 on Saturday and won the quarterfinals with a dominating 5-1 victory in Sunday's deciding Game 3.

Clarkson will meet up with defending ECAC Hockey Tournament Champion Harvard in the semifinal round on Friday in Lake Placid, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Cornell and Princeton will face off in the other semifinal game at 4:00 p.m. at the 1980 Rink – Herb Brooks Arena. Semifinal winners will play in Saturday's Championship game at 7:30 p.m.

Guided, by ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year Finalist Casey Jones, now in his seventh year behind the Clarkson bench, and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, the Knights are ranked among the Top 10 teams in the nation with a 22-9-6 overall record. The Green and Gold finished third in the conference standings with a 12-5-5 league mark.

• Clarkson has been a force in the ECAC since the league was formed at the start of the 1961-62 season. The Knights have participated in 56 of the conference's first 57 postseason tournaments, winning five league championships (1966, 1991, 1993, 1999, 2007). Clarkson owns a 93-79-5 record in the conference playoffs, and is 13-18 in the semifinal round. The Knights post a 54-27-4 quarterfinal-round record. Clarkson is a 9-7-1 in six years as the third seed, including winning the 1993 tournament title, the last season it was the third seed.
• The Knights have advanced to 32 league championship tournaments and have skated in 13 title games, winning its fifth in 2007 with a 4-2 victory over Quinnipiac in the championship game at the Times Union Center in Albany.
• Clarkson earned a first-round bye for the first time since 2008, finishing in third place after coming up just short of a top-four finish the past several seasons.
•    One of the few teams to hold an advantage against Clarkson in an all-time series, Harvard leads Clarkson 57-54-12 and also holds an 11-9-1 edge in ECAC Hockey postseason play, including a 5-4 advantage in semifinal-round action. In their last playoff meeting, the Crimson swept the Green and Gold in the 2011 first-round series at Cheel, winning 2-1 and 6-4. The Knights' last postseason victory over Harvard was in Game 2 of the 2007 quarterfinals (2-1), which helped propel Clarkson to the 2007 championship title. 
•    Since 1980, Clarkson is 15-12 on the Olympic ice (200'x100') in Lake Placid and posted an 8-9 mark in the ECAC Hockey Tournament when it was held in Lake Placid for 10 years from 1993-2002.  Clarkson won the league championship on the 1980 Rink ice in 1993 and 1999. The Knights' last game in Lake Placid was a 6-1 win over Rensselaer on January 7, 2017.
•    The Knights' 22 wins through 37 games this season equals the victories Clarkson posted in 2007-08 through 39 games. That was the last Clarkson team to reach the NCAA Tournament, finishing with a 22-13-4 record.
•    Clarkson boasts the second-rated defense in the nation, allowing only 1.84 goals per game.  The 68 goals the Knights have allowed is the lowest goals surrendered by the Green and Gold since the 1964-65 team gave up 67 through 25 games. The Knights have posted nine shutouts on the year, the most ever in a single season at Clarkson.
•    A Top-10 Finalist for the 2018 Mike Richter Award, which honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men's hockey, and a finalist for ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year, sophomore Jake Kielly established a new Clarkson record for shutouts in season by blanking Colgate in Game 2 for his eighth whitewash of the 2017-18 campaign. He broke the previous mark set of seven set by Wayne Gibbons in 1961-62. The school record for most career shutouts is 16. Kielly has 11 in two seasons. Starting 35 of 36 games. He ranks fourth in the nation in goals against average (1.79), seventh in save percentage (.931) and is tied for second in shutouts.
•    Clarkson is tied for fourth in the nation in scoring margin at 1.30 goals per game. The Knights have outscored their opponents in every period this season with the closest margin coming in the third period, 38-26. The Green and Gold have almost doubled up the opposition in the middle frame, outscoring their foes 44-23 in the second period.
•    Clarkson is coming off its most productive offensive outing in almost two months with five goals in the Game 3, 5-1 victory over Colgate.  Clarkson combined for eight goals in its two quarterfinal wins.  A different Knight accounted for each goal over the last two games. Marly Quince led the series with two goals - Clarkson's lone goal in Game 1 and a score in Game 2.
•    The Knights are averaging 3.14 goals per game, ranking 15th in the nation in offense. 
•    The third-leading scorer in ECAC Hockey, sophomore Sheldon Rempal has tallied 22 goals, the most at Clarkson since Eric Cole produced 22 in 1998-99. The right wing's 43 points are the most by a Golden Knight since Mac Faulkner tallied 43 in 2003-04. He leads Clarkson in game-winning goals (4) and is tied for second on the team in power-play markers with six. Rempal has recorded 13 points (4-9) over his last seven games. He has accumulated 66 career points (33-33) in 75 games. 
• ECAC Hockey's Best Defensive Forward, Nico Sturm continues to lead the nation in the faceoff category, winning 62.2% of his draws (415-252). He is the Knights' second leading scorer with 36 points on 14 goals and 22 assists. Sturm has connected for five power-play goals, three game-winners and both of Clarkson's shorthanded tallies. The sophomore center has recorded nine points (4-5) over the past six games. 
• Left wing Devin Brosseau rounds out the Sophomore Line as another 30-point scorer for the Green and Gold. The assistant captain has tallied 31 points, including 21 assists along with posting a +15 plus/minus rating. Five of his 10 goals have come on the power play.
•    A finalist for ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year, Jack Jacome has tallied seven goals and 21 assists for 28 points, the most by a Clarkson rookie since Rob McFeeters put up 30 in the 2000-01 campaign. 
•    The Knights went 11-3-5 at home and 9-6-1 on the road. Clarkson is 2-0-0 in neutral site games, having won both games at the Friendship Four Tournament in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was the second Thanksgiving Holiday tournament the Green and Gold have won in the past two seasons and the first time an ECAC Hockey squad won it all in Belfast.
•    Clarkson highlights one of the top defensive pairings in the nation in senior blueliners Kelly Summers and Terrance Amorosa
• A finalist for the league's Best Defensive Defenseman award, Summers leads the Knights' blueline in scoring with 29 points, equaling the mark set by James de Haas for most points by a Clarkson defenseman since 2002-03. He is Clarkson's leading playmaker with 23 assists.  The 2014 Ottawa Senators' draftee is the Knights' fourth-leading scorer, post a +17 plus/minus rating, has tallied three power-play goals and two gamewinners and leads the team in block shots (54).
•  A 2013 Philadelphia Flyers' draft choice, Amorosa has recorded 26 points with all seven of his goals coming on the power play. He posts a team-high +20 plus/minus rating and has netted two game-winners.
Josh Dickinson rounds out Clarkson's 20-point scorers. He is fifth in the nation for goals scored by a freshman with 14 tallies to go along with 11 assists. Dickinson is a key member of the Green and Gold's power play, connecting six times on the man-advantage. The center leads the country in block shots by a rookie forward with 39.
• The Knights are third in the nation in combined specialty teams play at 55.3% (166/300).
• Clarkson's power play is fourth in the country, clicking at 26.3% (40-152). The Knights went 2-of-10 on the man-advantage in the quarterfinals vs Colgate with a power-play goal in each of the last two games of the series.
• The Knights' penalty kill is 7th in the NCAA at 85.1% (126-148).
•    Clarkson experienced two lengthy streaks during the regular season. The Knights posted the second-longest winning streak in the program's 96-year history with 14 consecutive victories from November 3 through January 13. The Green and Gold also endured an eight-game winless stretch (0-4-4) from January 27 through February 23, the longest number of games without a win since midway through the 2009-10 campaign (0-8-1).
• The Knights are 15-0-1 when leading after the first and 22-1-2 when holding the lead through 40 minutes.
• Clarkson's captain Nic Pierog, who along with assistant captains senior Brett Gervais and Devin Brosseau, has led the Knights back to the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament for the first time in 11 years. He tallied the opening goal and had one assist in the quarterfinal-series clinching win over Colgate for his first multiple-point game of the season. A center, he has scored four goals and nine assists through 35 games and posts a +11 plus/minus rating. Pierog, who completed his undergraduate degree in finance in three years at Clarkson in May, 2017, is working towards his MBA. After wearing #20 through his first three years, he wears the #6 this season, becoming the first Golden Knight to honor this jersey since the late Clarkson captain Mike Morrison in 1988-89. Pierog also heads up Clarkson Hockey's Headway Foundation efforts for concussion awareness.
• Clarkson has played in 15 games that have been decided by three goals or more, going 13-2. The Knights have skated in six games where they scored more than four goals, including a pair of six-goal outings.
• The Knights are only 2-5-6 in games decided by one-goal-or-less.
• Clarkson all-star goaltender David Leggio '08 was a member of the United States Men's Olympic Hockey team at the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. Leggio established himself as one of the best goaltenders in Clarkson's illustrious history, playing for the Golden Knights from 2004-08. He helped the the Green and Gold compile 78 victories from 2004-2008, two back-to-back 20-win campaigns (2006-07, 2007-08) for the first time in 10 seasons, an ECAC Hockey Tournament Championship (2007) and a conference regular season title (2008) along with making two consecutive showings in the NCAA Tournament (2007, 2008). He posted a 59-29-12 career record, including eight shutouts. Leggio completed his collegiate career with a .922 save percentage and a 2.30 goals against average.
• In its 96th season, Clarkson boasts 73 winning campaigns and a 1,435-860-160 all-time record for a .617 winning % since 1920-21.
