ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal Action Returns to Cheel As Clarkson Host Colgate

ECAC Hockey quarterfinal action returns to Cheel Arena for the first time in 10 years when Clarkson University hosts Colgate in a best-of-three game series this weekend. The Golden Knights, who earned the No.3 seed in the conference playoffs, and Raiders will face off in Game 1 of the best-of-three-game series on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The teams will meet again on Saturday in Game 2 at 7:00 p.m. If the series is tied after the first two nights, a deciding Game 3 will be played on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. 

Guided by seventh-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, Clarkson skated to its best ECAC Hockey finish since 2008 with a 12-5-5 league mark. The Green and Gold closed out the regular season by taking three of four points in the final weekend. The Knights tied Princeton 3-3 and then defeated Quinnipiac 4-2 for their first victory since January 26, snapping out of an eight-game winless stretch (0-4-4). 

Clarkson is ranked among the top 10 teams in the country with a 20-8-6 overall record.

• Clarkson has been a force in the ECAC since the league was formed at the start of the 1961-62 season. The Knights have participated in 55 of the conference's first 56 postseason tournaments, winning five league championships (1966, 1991, 1993, 1999, 2007). Clarkson owns a 91-78-5 record in the conference playoffs, and is 52-26-4 in the quarterfinal round. Clarkson has a 7-6-1 postseason record in five years as the third seed, including winning the 1993 tournament title, the last season it was the third seed.
• Clarkson earned a first-round bye for the first time since 2008. That season, the Green and Gold were the number 1 seed, but fell to Colgate in a hard-fought quarterfinal series at Cheel Arena, losing 2-1 (0-1, 4-3, 3-2 2ot).
• The Knights have advanced to 31 league championship tournaments and have skated in 13 title games, winning its fifth in 2007 with a 4-2 victory over Quinnipiac in the championship game at the Times Union Center in Albany.
•    Clarkson is 3-1-1 against Colgate over their last five meetings to improve its record against the Raiders to 84-52-18 in the all-time series, which began during the 1927-28 campaign. The Knights took three of four points during the regular season, winning 5-2 in Hamilton, NY on November 17 and skating to a 4-4 tie in Potsdam on February 10. 
•    Clarkson has posted a 7-3-1 mark against Colgate in the ECAC Hockey playoffs, including a 5-2 record in the quarterfinal round. The Raiders, however, knocked off the Green and Gold in their last postseason meeting, winning the 2008 quarterfinals at Cheel 2-1.
•    The Knights are 9-2-5 at home, 9-6-1 on the road and 2-0-0 in neutral site games (Belfast)this season.  After this weekend, all of the remaining games will be play at neutral sites.
•    Clarkson experienced two lengthy streaks during the regular season. The Knights posted the second-longest winning streak in the program's 96-year history with 14 consecutive victories from November 3 through January 13. The Green and Gold also endured an eight-game winless stretch (0-4-4) from January 27 through February 23, the longest number of games without a win since midway through the 2009-10 campaign (0-8-1).
•    Clarkson is fifth in the nation in scoring margin at 1.24 goals per game. The Knights have outscored their opponents in every period this season with the closest margin coming in the third period, 35-26. The Green and Gold have doubled up the opposition in the middle frame, outscoring their foes 41-20 in the second period.
•    Clarkson boasts the second-rated defense in the nation, allowing only 1.91 goals per game.  The Knights, however, gave up 25 combined goals over seven of the eight games in February. Clarkson did, however, pick up its eighth shutout of the season with a 0-0 tie vs. Cornell at Cheel Arena on February 9.
• The Green and Gold rank 13th offensively in the country, averaging 3.15 goals per game.
• The Knights, who struggled at times to score during their eight-game winless stretch, seemed to have regained their offensive confidence in the final regular-season weekend, combining for seven goals in the tie against Princeton (3) and the win over Quinnipiac (4). 
• The Knights are tops in the nation in combined specialty teams play at 55.7% (157/282).
• Clarkson's power play is third in the country, clicking at 26.8% (38-142). The Knights had a stretch of games with at least one power-play goal stopped at four after going 0-of-5 on the man advantage against Quinnipiac. Despite matching their worst outing on the power play this season, the Knights still managed to win their only game in the month of February, defeating the Bobcats 4-2. Clarkson also went 0-of-5 at Union, but defeated the Dutchmen 4-1.
• The Knights' penalty kill is 9th in the NCAA at 85% (119-140).
•    Clarkson's leading scorer, Sheldon Rempal is the fourth-leading scorer overall in ECAC Hockey with 39 points on 21 goals and 18 assists through 33 games. Rempal's goal total is the highest for the Knights in 10 years and his point total is the best at Clarkson since the 2006-07 campaign. He leads Clarkson in game-winning goals (4) and is one on three Knights with a team-high six power-play tallies. Rempal has recorded at least two points in each of his last four games. The junior right wing has accumulated 62 career points (32-30) in 72 games. 
•    Sophomore center Nico Sturm is the NCAA's top player on face offs, winning 62.1% (383-240) of his draws. The Knights' second-leading scorer, Sturm recorded a career-high four points and posted his fifth career two-goal game in the 4-2 win over Quinnipiac. He enters the playoffs with four goals and two assists in his last three games. Sturm has tallied 33 points (14-19), five power-play goals, three game-winners and two shorthanded markers to go along with a team-high +17 plus/minus rating.
• The left wing on Clarkson's Sophomore Line, Devin Brosseau also enters the playoffs on a hot streak with a four-game point streak (3-2). The assistant captain is third in scoring with 30 points, including 21 assists. Five of his nine goals have come on the power play.
• A 2014 Ottawa Senators' draftee, senior defenseman Kelly Summers leads Clarkson in scoring from the blueline with 28 points, including a team-high 22 assists. He has tallied seven points (3-4) in the last five games. He has posted a team-high 51 blocked shots.
• A 2013 Philadelphia Flyers' draft choice, Terrance Amorosa has 25 points.   All six of his goals have come on the power play. He holds a +16 plus/minus rating. 
•    Jack Jacome has recorded the most points by a Clarkson freshman in 11 years with 26 (6-20). He was second in ECAC Hockey for rookie scoring, both overall and in league play.
•    Sophomore Jake Kielly has played more minutes (1968:08) than any other ECAC Hockey goaltender having played in 33 games, including 32 starts. He ranks third in the conference in overall GAA (1.86) and fourth in save percentage (.929), is tied for most wins (19) and is second in shutouts (7). 

Scouting Colgate
Colgate advances to the quarterfinal round after edging out RPI 2-1 in a best-of-three first-round series in Hamilton over the weekend. The Raiders won Game 1 (3-1), lost Game 2 (1-0) and took the series with a 2-0 victory in Game 3 on Sunday. Guided by Head Coach Don Vaugan, now in his 25th season behind the Colgate bench, the Raiders own a 16-15-6 overall record. Colgate closed out the regular season with a three-game winning streak (2-0-1) to finish with a 10-9-3 ECAC Hockey mark, good for a fifth-place tie in the standings with Dartmouth, but earning the sixth seed. The Raiders post one of the best defenses in the nation, allowing only 2.14 goals per game, ranking sixth nationally. Goaltender Colton Point ranks first in the country in save percentage (.948) and is second in goals against average (1.62).  Colgate is 5-9-4 in road games.

The Series
Clarkson is 3-1-1 against Colgate over their last five meetings to improve its record against the Raiders to 84-52-18 in the all-time series, which began during the 1927-28 campaign. The Knights took three of four points during the regular season, winning 5-2 in Hamilton, NY on November 17 and skating to a 4-4 tie in Potsdam on February 10. The NYS rivals split their series last year with the Raiders winning 3-2 at home and the Knights posting a 3-0 shutout at Cheel Arena on February 17. That was the first time in 11 meetings between the two that a game was decided by more than one goal, followed by the three-goal margin in the first game this season. The Knights hold a slim 12-11-9 advantage over Colgate at Cheel. The Raiders earned a 2-1 victory on January 9, 2015 for their last win in Potsdam.
Clarkson has posted a 7-3-1 mark against Colgate in the ECAC Hockey playoffs, including a 5-2 record in the quarterfinal round. The Raiders, however, knocked off the Green and Gold in their last postseason meeting, winning the 2008 quarterfinals at Cheel. The Knights won the first game in the best-of-three series 1-0, but the Raiders came back to win Game 2 (4-3) and Game 3 (3-2 2ot).
Sheldon Rempal with five goals and one assist leads Clarkson in scoring against Colgate. Kelly Summers (2-2) and Josh Dickinson (2-1) are the only other Knights with multiple goals in the series. Jake Kielly posts a .907 save percentage, a 2.21 goals against average and a 2-1-1 record with one shutout through four games against the Raiders.
