Knights Split with Raptors in Doubleheader Makeup

Potsdam, NY – Senior Brad Pearson ripped three doubles and drove in three runs in game two as the Clarkson University Baseball team salvaged a split against Bard College, dropping the opener 4-3 and winning the nightcap 15-2 at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights moved to 15-12 overall and 10-4 in the Liberty League, remaining in first place in the league standings, one game ahead of RIT, Union, and Rensselaer. Bard College saw its record go to 13-18 and 7-11. Clarkson is scheduled to play Plattsburgh State on Wednesday afternoon.

In the opener, Bard's Evan Richardson was effectively wild, allowing six free passes and two hit by pitches, which was enough to keep Clarkson guessing at the plate where the team compiled a total of two hits. The Raptors scored once in the first on a sacrifice fly by Esteban Rivera and then another in the third on a Chris Blake single. Clarkson got on the board with doubles from Mike Mieczkowski and Mike Nee to cut the margin to one.

In the fourth, Rivera doubled home a run to put Bard up 3-1 and a Josh Fiume double to left in the fifth gave the Raptors a 4-1 advantage. Clarkson scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth when Mieczkowski scored on an error via a fielder's choice and Nee came around on a sacrifice fly. However, Clarkson went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings to close out the contest.

In game two, the Golden Knights found barreled up plenty of pitches, pounding out 17 hits overall, with most of those coming in the first four frames. Mieczkowski doubled in a pair in the first, with Nee singling home another and Nolan Duda homering to right for a 5-0 Clarkson lead after one. The Knights tacked on two more runs in both the second and third innings, and then really broke the game open with a six-spot in the fourth. Burns singled home a run and Pearson plated two with a double. Nee then singled home another run and Krick plated a pair with yet another single.

The offensive production was ample for senior Mike Bubniak, who gave up six hits and struck out five in five frames to gain the win. Freshman Jake Scurrah tossed the final two innings, striking out the side in the sixth and whiffing two more around a ground out in the seventh.

Pearson was 3-for-5 with three doubles and three runs batted in during game two. Nee was 3-for-3 with three runs scored two more driven in, while Duda, Krick, Mike Messier and Mike Tito each delivered two hits in the second contest.
