Women's Volleyball | 8/28/2019 10:06:00 AM

Although the Clarkson University Volleyball team was unable to secure a seventh straight conference title last November, the Golden Knights are firmly in position to challenge for the Liberty League Championship once again in 2019.

The Green and Gold went 17-11 overall in 2018, their 12th consecutive season above .500 and the 17th time in the past 18 years that the program has produced a winning record. Clarkson begins the 2019 campaign in the Mountain Time Zone, challenging itself at the Colorado College Tournament the final weekend of August. Clarkson will play at home 12 times this fall, beginning with a tournament the first full weekend of September.

Key Returners: Clarkson returns a pair of AVCA All-Americans in seniors Kate Isaksen and Rachel Reusch along with 10 other veterans from last year's team. Isaksen became the program's first AVCA First-Team All-American after leading the country in digs (901) and ranking second in the nation in digs per set (7.97) from the libero position. Reusch, an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention, recorded 3.51 kills per set and 1.00 blocks per set in a dominant season, which included 41 solo blocks, a figure that was nearly twice any other player in the Liberty League. Classmate Maddie Bredehoeft averaged 2.65 kills and 3.50 digs per set as an outside hitter, and those numbers could be improved upon if she can successfully dodge the handful of injuries she endured in 2018. Junior middle hitter Gillian Kurtic got better as the season went on, recording four of her six double-digit kill outputs in the final three weeks of the season, including a 29-kill effort over two matches in the Liberty League Tournament. Junior Amanda Collins and sophomore Haley Aud split the setting duties last season, with each averaging better than seven assists per set.

Hoping to bolster the defensive effort along with Isaksen and Bredehoeft, junior Grace Mayer (2.28 digs per set) and sophomore Celestial Barrera-Lopez (2.33 digs per set) will look to add to their numbers. Offensively, senior Delaney Harrison and sophomores Kristen Liu, Ivy Martin and Megan McEwen will look to use their size up front for a diverse offense while providing a block that will be difficult to navigate for opposing teams.

Key Newcomers: Head coach Carol LaMarche sprinkled in talent all around the court to provide further depth for the Golden Knights in 2019. Junior transfer Ocean Bryan comes from Walla Walla Community College and is already college tested, giving the Knights another seasoned offensive weapon. Additional hitters Kristin Werdine and Abigail Nickel also add themselves as options to the team's offensive firepower. Isabelle Crow gives Clarkson more depth at setter, and Emma Baxter could not have a better mentor than Isaksen as she eyes the libero spot in the future.
