Knights Upended at Morrisville, 72-64

Morrisville, NY – A 10-0 run in the final two-plus minutes by the home team turned a small lead into an eight-point loss for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team as the Golden Knights dropped a 72-64 decision to Morrisville on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-5 on the season while Morrisville evened their season mark at 5-5. Clarkson will return to Liberty League play this weekend when the team travels to face Bard College and Vassar College.

Junior Hannah Earl posted her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 16 rebounds, but the Golden Knights committed 30 turnovers in the game, mitigating their huge advantage on the glass (plus-22 rebounding margin).

The first time the two teams met back in mid-November, Clarkson held Morrisville to just three points in the first quarter. However, the Mustangs surpassed that total in the first couple of possessions, making back-to-back 3-pointers early on. Clarkson recovered to take a one-point lead near the midway point of the quarter, but Morrisville went on an 8-0 run to nearly double up the Knights at 16-9. Clarkson trailed by the same margin in the first few minutes of the second quarter (22-15, 6:39 remaining) before going on an 8-0 run of its own to take the lead. The two teams traded baskets for much of the second quarter, but Clarkson closed out the half with a one-point lead (29-28).

In the third quarter Clarkson owned a huge advantage on the boards, picking up 10 offensive rebounds and holding an 18-6 advantage in rebounding overall. However, the second chances didn't provide the Knights with much in the way in offense as Clarkson shot only 7-for-26 in the 10-minute stretch of the third period. Through 30 minutes, the Knights did lead by four (46-42), but Morrisville began the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run in the span of less than 90 seconds. Clarkson recovered and took the lead on a Hannah Earl jumper at the 6:40 mark (53-52), and the Knights pushed the margin to five (62-57) three minutes later on a Rachel Marion basket in the lane.

With just over two minutes to go, Maddie Pratt put Clarkson up 64-62, but those were the final points of the game for Clarkson. The Knights went 0-for-6 from the field and committed three untimely turnovers as Morrisville found just enough offense to keep Clarkson off-balance and desperate for points.

Hannah Earl finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass. Rachel Marion chipped in 15 points and seven boards and Maddie Pratt enjoyed her best game as a collegian with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Rachel Vieira carried Morrisville for much of the game, scoring eight points in the first quarter and 25 points in the second half for a game-high 33 on 11-for-17 shooting, including five 3-pointers. Tori Rockefeller tossed in 19 points, Miranda Wright contributed 11 rebounds and A-Laya Wright added in six steals and five assists for the Mustangs.
