Late Run by RIT Sends Clarkson to 67-54 Defeat

Rochester, NY – A hot final quarter by RIT turned a close game into a double-digit defeat for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team as the Golden Knights dropped a 67-54 decision in Liberty League action Friday evening.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-12 overall and 3-10 in conference games while the Tigers edged up to 9-11 and 7-6. Clarkson faces William Smith on Saturday afternoon while RIT takes on St. Lawrence.

The Tigers shot 8-for-13 in the fourth quarter, doubling up Clarkson 24-12 in the final 10 minutes of the game.

After giving up the first four points of the game, Clarkson scored the next five to take a modest lead at the 7:45 mark of the first period, but RIT went on a 9-0 run in the next three minutes as Clarkson missed six straight shots in that stretch. The Knights took a timeout and Mariah Benavides buried a 3-pointer to get things rolling again as Clarkson went on a 9-2 run of its own in a span of just two and a half minutes.

Starting the second quarter, Clarkson pulled to within one on two occasions before finally reclaiming the lead at the 5:08 mark on a steal and fast break layup by Emma Buonanno. The Knights would hold the advantage briefly, but Clarkson would not fall behind by much as a Hannah Earl 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in the half made it a one-point game at the half (31-30).

Earl and Benavides each had nine points in the first half, with the latter scoring her points on a 3-for-6 effort from beyond the 3-point arc. For the Tigers, Kaleesha Joseph shot 5-for-6 from the field for 10 points while adding in five rebounds. RIT shot better than 50 percent from the floor in the half while the Knights were below 40 percent, but six offensive rebounds and a plus-three in the turnover column kept things close.

Clarkson again gained a one-point lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but the Knights were unable to expand their advantage. RIT scored eight straight after losing its lead, including a four-point swing on one possession which included two layups thanks to a make from Joseph, a missed free throw, offensive rebound, and basket by Sabrina Wolfe. RIT scored its last basket at the 4:48 mark for a seven-point lead (43-36), but Mariah Benavides pulled Clarkson back to within one through 30 minutes, making a pair of long 3-pointers.

As had happened in each of the previous three quarters, an early basket gave Clarkson a one-point lead when Hannah Earl made a short jumper in the opening minute. However, the Knights once again could not expand their advantage past a single point. The lead was exchanged twice, but RIT rattled off 10 straight points with increased defensive pressure that created four turnovers in less than 90 seconds. The Knights halted the run after a timeout, but the Tigers kept their offense humming and expanded the lead to as many as 15 points before finally settling for a 13-point margin at the horn.

Earl led all scorers with 21 points to lead Clarkson while Benavides tossed in 15 points, all on 3-pointers. Emma Buonanno also added in 10 points, six rebounds and four steals and Rachel Marion contributed six assists.

For RIT, Brooke Stanley shot 8-for-12 from the floor for 20 points while Kaleesha Joseph had a double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds. Alyssa Juergens added 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Sabrina Wolfe scored 13.
