Knights Drop Opener to BSC 83-67

Story Links

Potsdam, NY – Senior Emma Buonanno delivered a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds but her effort wasn't enough as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team dropped an 83-67 decision to Bryant & Stratton College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights opened the season with a loss to put them at 0-1, while the Bobcats improved to 4-1 on the campaign.

Clarkson struggled with the BSC full-court pressure in the opening minutes, allowing the Bobcats to claim a double-digit lead by the midway point of the opening period. Clarkson trailed by just four after a jumper from Rachel Marion at the 5:39 mark, but the Golden Knights were held scoreless for the rest of the period while BSC rattled off 14 unanswered points to close out the quarter.

By the second quarter, Clarkson began to make shots from beyond the 3-point arc, including some early long-range shots by Carly Assimon and Tess Maline. However, the Bobcats kept their offense rolling with a 26-point period, including a 3-pointer by Tamia Tart at the buzzer.

By the second half, Clarkson began to handle the pressure a little better and found more of an offensive rhythm, steadily chipping away at the deficit. It took some time to get the margin below 20, but Clarkson got within 16 after a pair of free throws from Buonanno at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Hannah Earl dropped in a 3-pointer at 8:28 to pull the Knights within 13, but that was as close as Clarkson would get as the two teams essentially traded baskets for most of the period. Any hope of a comeback was squashed near the midway point of the period when BSC created two straight steals at midcourt for easy fast break layups.

Buonanno notched her fourth career double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, including five boards on the offensive end. She shot 7-for-12 from the floor and was 6-for-9 from the free throw line. Hannah Earl tossed in 12 points and both Tess Maline and Carly Assimon scored nine off the bench.

For BSC, Alissa Johnson had 16 points and six boards while both Armoni Jordan and Charm Stone recorded 11 points. Mary Caldwell came off the bench to score 10. The Bobcats were just one make short of shooting 50 percent from the floor (30-for-62) and forced 27 turnovers.
