Knights Come Up Short in Defensive Battle Versus RIT

Rochester, NY – Neither team had many chances on the frames, but RIT took advantage of its handful of opportunities, downing the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team 2-0 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 2-5-2 overall and 0-2-0 in conference matches, while RIT improved to 6-2-2 and 2-0-1 in league games. Clarkson will be back at home this week, hosting St. Lawrence University on Wednesday and Hobart College on Saturday.

Each team had a shot on goal in the first 12 minutes, but things were otherwise quiet for much of the opening half. James Nicholas missed wide left in the 33rd minute as the first attempt by either team in more than 20 minutes.

RIT was able to take some momentum into the locker room when the Tigers scored in the final minute of the first half. The Knights were able to clear the ball out of the penalty area, but an RIT player picked up the loose ball roughly 30 yards away and sent in a high cross to the opposite side. There, Tommy Reed was able to head the ball to the far post, where it deflected back into the center of the box and Bret Kaemmerlen easily gathered the ball and hit a grounder to the low left side for a 1-0 RIT lead at 44:16.

Shots were again at a premium in the second half as the two teams again combined for just five shots in a stretch of 45 minutes. RIT scored an insurance goal late in the second half when Alec Jackson passed the ball into the deep right corner, finding the feet of Jaden Longdon. Longdon was able to evade defenders and sent a hard ground ball pass through traffic to Jonathan Cohen, and Cohen hit a clean strike for the second goal of the game at 76:51.

RIT held small advantages in shots (6-4) and corner kick chances (4-2). Bryan Benitez made two saves for the Knights and Jason Trapp denied two shots for the shutout.
