Knights Open Conference Slate with Loss at Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY - Although the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team overcame a slow start, the Golden Knights couldn't maintain their momentum down the stretch and dropped a 62-35 decision to Skidmore College on Friday evening.

The loss drops the Golden Knights to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore remains unbeaten at 6-0 and 1-0. Clarkson looks to get on track against Union College on Saturday afternoon as the two teams will tip-off at 2:00 pm.

Clarkson recovered from a slow start in the first six minutes of the opening quarter after finding itself down by eight by missing the first 11 shots of the game. However, the Knights went 5-for-7 over the last four minutes of the quarter to get within four at the first break. Mariah Benavides hit a layup to start the Knights' strong stretch and Likhita Chanda hit a key 3-pointer with 1:08 left in the first period to make the score 15-11 in the first 10 minutes.

Unfortunately, the Knights failed to carry over the momentum into the second quarter. Although Clarkson was down by just four after a Cassidy Dumont layup at 7:23, Skidmore went on an 11-0 run in the next four minutes. Elaina Porter hit a jumper to end the scoreless streak, and Mariah Benavides hit some free throws in the waning seconds of the half, but Clarkson found itself down by 13 at intermission.

A similar scoreless stretch hurt the Knights in the third quarter as well. Ruthie Nolan hit a 3-pointer at 7:37 and Porter converted inside on a layup 35 seconds later to make the score 33-22, but the Thoroughbreds ended the quarter on a 15-2 run, doubling up Clarkson 48-24 through three quarters. In the fourth, Clarkson pulled to within 21 once, but that would be as close as the Knights would get.

Porter led the Knights with eight points while Benavides, Dumont, and Maddie Pratt each chipped in six points. Benavides found her teammates for four assists and Pratt also had three steals. Lauren Bell snagged 10 rebounds, while Ruthie Nolan added in seven boards.

For Skidmore, Claire Driscoll led all scorers with 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting and Andi Levitz tossed in 12, going 4-for-8 from beyond the 3-point arc. Julia Blanck also added a game-high 14 rebounds. Skidmore shot 8-for-18 from the 3-point line (44.4%).
