Earl Scores 20-Plus for Second Straight Game, But Knights Fall at SLU

Canton, NY – Freshman Abby Doin scored 13 of her 17 in the fourth quarter for St. Lawrence as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team went cold in the final 10 minutes to suffer its second defeat to the Saints this year, falling 53-46 on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights dropped to 6-4 on the year while St. Lawrence improved to 2-4. The two teams will meet up one final time on Friday evening, once again in Canton.

A combination of off-target shooting and strong defense limited both teams offensively in the first half. Neither team could maintain momentum in the first quarter, as the two teams traded short runs with St. Lawrence ending the first period with a 4-0 run to take a 13-10 lead. A three-point play on a layup and free throw from Hannah Earl put Clarkson back in the lead and Elaina Porter quickly followed with a basket at the 4:05 mark of the second period, but the Saints shot 5-for-9 over the final three-plus minutes for a 10-0 run to end the half.

The two teams missed all 17 of their 3-point attempts in the first half, but eventually the lid came off in the third. The Saints hit their first 3-pointer around the midway point of the quarter, only to see Clarkson hit three straight from beyond the arc to swing a five-point deficit into a four-point lead when Tess Maline buried the third 3-pointer with 2:19 remaining. Clarkson outscored the Saints 21-9 in the third quarter, including a 16-3 rush to close the period.

Clarkson's impressive run to end the third quarter was halted in the fourth, as the Knights had trouble finishing from the perimeter and the interior. Hannah Earl was the only player to score in the quarter, hitting a 3-pointer, a layup, and a free throw, until Molly Stewart made a basket on the Knights' final possession of the game. At the other end, Abby Doin got hot, hitting three 3-pointers and a pair of other long jumpers, helping to swing the game from a five-point Clarkson lead into a seven-point St. Lawrence win.

Earl scored 20 points to lead all scorers, shooting 7-for-18 from the floor, while Lauren Bell added six points and six rebounds off the bench for the Knights. Doin had 17 points, doing most of her damage in the fourth quarter and Kristen Varin added 10 points and seven rebounds. St. Lawrence was plus-eight in rebounding, just the second time this season that the Saints had the edge in that department.
