Benavides Scores 13, But Knights Fall at Rochester, 51-44

Rochester, NY – Hannah Lindemuth scored all 12 of her points in the fourth quarter so spark the University of Rochester in the final period as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team suffered a 51-44 defeat on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 3-3 on the season while Rochester improved to 3-1. Clarkson will be back at home on Tuesday afternoon when it takes on St. Lawrence University for the fourth time in 2021.

Things started off relatively slow for both teams in the first quarter, as neither shot better than 33 percent from the field. Rochester took advantage of Clarkson's continued shooting woes at the start of the second, scoring the first eight points of the period to turn a two-point lead into a 10-point margin (21-11) near the middle mark of the quarter. Sophomore guard Mariah Benavides that got hot from beyond the 3-point arc, hitting a long-range shot at 5:57, pulling up for another 3-pointer on the fast break at 4:19, and nailing another at 3:10 to get Clarkson back within four. Molly Stewart also added a basket late to get the Knights back within two at the break.

Though Clarkson wasn't particularly strong in the third quarter, its defense was, holding the Yellowjackets to just three makes in the first 10 minutes after intermission. The Knights took advantage, outscoring Rochester 14-6 in the third. Molly Stewart hit a 3-pointer at the 6:57 mark to give Clarkson its first lead since the early moments of the game and the gap eventually widened to six when Meredith James converted in the final minute on the break and Benavides sunk a pair of free throws.

Clarkson led by as many as seven when Meredith James hit a short jumper at the 8:18 mark of the fourth quarter (40-33), but the Knights went cold for the rest of the quarter and Rochester's 8-for-14 effort from the floor in the final period was enough to alter the momentum. The game was tied at 42-42 with less than five minutes remaining, but Hannah Lindemuth scored nine straight points for the Yellowjackets in the next three-plus minutes. Hannah Earl hit a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left on the clock, but there wasn't enough time remaining for the Knights to get back within striking distance.

Benavides finished with 13 points for Clarkson while Emma Buonanno added in eight points and four rebounds. Callie McCulley finished with a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds and Julianna Okoniewski had eight points and 15 boards. Hannah Lindemuth scored 12, all coming in the fourth period.
