Knights Swept by Cardinals in 2021 Season-Opener

Auburn, NY – In its first action in nearly a year, the Clarkson University Baseball team dropped the opening doubleheader of the season to St. John Fisher, falling 8-6 in the first game and 12-0 in the nightcap, at Falcon Park.

The two teams will play another nine-inning contest at Falcon Park on Friday afternoon.

Clarkson struck first in the opener, scoring in the first as Caleb Doyle was hit by a pitch and took second on a two-out stolen base. Colby Brouillette took advantage of Doyle's head's up base running by singling up the middle to score Clarkson's leadoff man. The next seven runs were scored by St. John Fisher, as the Cardinals pushed across three in the second, one in the third, and three more in the fourth. All of the runs for the Cardinals in the third were unearned as extra opportunities allowed James Ward to drive in a run with a single up the middle and Luke Duffy drove in a pair with a double. James Murphy also delivered a two-out single in the third to score Noah Campanelli, and three straight sacrifice flies plated runs in the fourth.

The Knights climbed back into the game in the top of the fifth as a pair of infield singles allowed Caleb Doyle to single in a run to make it 7-2. Mike Nee then reached on an error as Jonathan Irons and Doyle each raced around the bases to close the margin to 7-4. In the sixth, Michael Tito singled and advanced on a wild pitch, which turned out not to matter as much when Kent Wilson homered to right to make the score 7-6. The Cardinals tacked on a run on a one-out single form Justin Graham. Clarkson put a runner on in both the seventh and the ninth, but the Knights' offense was quieted in the final inning when Marty Williams struck out three to earn the save.

Wilson and Irons each went 2-for-4 for the Knights, while Doyle scored twice. Griffin Tubbs took the loss for Clarkson, but allowed just a single earned run in three frames while also giving up four hits and two walks. Jake Phillips tossed the middle four frames and gave up two earned runs. Glenn Stever finished the game for Clarkson, throwing a scoreless eighth.

Anthony Brophy picked up the win for the Cardinals, throwing the second through fifth innings and striking out four while giving up four hits and a walk. Luke Duffy was the lone Cardinals player to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two more driven in.

In game two, the Cardinals scored four in the first thanks to three straight two-out hits, and then added five more in the third and three more in the fourth to complete the scoring. Unlike the first game, Clarkson was unable to keep pace in the second contest, going hitless against four pitchers. Michael Mieczkowski drew two walks and John Young reached on an error to account for Clarkson's base runners in the second contest. RJ Kuruts struck out 13 hitters over six frames to earn the win.
