Doyle Gets Double-Double in Loss to Union, 53-45

Potsdam, NY – A throwback game in which neither team hit many 3-pointers, Union College outlasted the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team 53-45 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in conference games, while Union evened its mark at 3-3 and 1-1. Clarkson will take on St. Lawrence University in another conference doubleheader on Wednesday, December 7th.

In the first quarter, Clarkson struggled from the floor, but was able to stick close to the Dutchwomen thanks to a strong effort from the free throw line in which the team went 6-for-7. Bella Doyle made Clarkson's first basket early on, but the Knights suffered a six-minute stretch without another make until Mariah Benavides' 3-pointer with 1:00 to go. Union only briefly lost the lead in the second quarter when Cassidy Dumont made a jumper at 7:40, but the Dutchwomen went on an 8-0 run over the next three-plus minutes to rebuild their advantage. Union finished the half with a 24-6 margin on points in the paint.

Clarkson got within a single possession on a handful of occasions in the third quarter, but never found that extra burst to take the lead. In the fourth, the Knights fell behind by as many as nine in the early going and eventually pulled within five, but both teams went quiet on offense for most of the period. It wasn't until the waning moments that free throws by the Dutchwomen provided enough cushion for them to take a little breath in the last minute.

Bella Doyle picked up her first collegiate double-double to lead Clarkson, scoring 13 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Elaina Porter was one point short of the same, finishing with nine points and 12 rebounds. Mariah Benavides also chipped in 10 points.

Kendall Degenhardt finished with a game-high 22 points, shooting 10-for-19 from the floor, while Megan Lee had 11 rebounds and three steals for the Dutchwomen. Neither team shot particularly well from the outside, as Clarkson made just two of its 17 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc, while Union was scoreless in its seven tries from distance.
