Knights fall to ASU in Adirondack Invitational Opener

Arizona State executed a third-period comeback, as Clarkson dropped the opening game of the Adirondack Winter Invitational by the final score of 5-2.  The score was deceiving, as ASU scored two empty net goals after they took the lead with just under 5 minutes left to play.

The Golden Knights' return to health following the holiday break headlined excitement behind the opening game of the tournament. Anthony Romano, Noah Beck, Daimon Gardner, and Cody Monds added to the team's depth, each returning after missing multiple games due to injury, and Clarkson's early control of the ice showed a glimmer of the potential that having a full lineup will bring for the upcoming second half of the season.

Clarkson opened up an early 6-2 shot advantage, including a handful of scoring chances in front of Arizona State netminder, TJ Semptimphelter. The Golden Knights' top line of Martino, Gosselin, and Romano reunited for the first time this season and opened the offensive pressure with a couple of strong shifts, including a cross-crease pass from Romano to Martino that sprung a shot off the post and out. Clarkson's pressure was rewarded by the fourth line's Jesse Tucker, who tipped in a pass from Eric Ciccolini to the top of the crease, giving the team a 1-0 lead with 11:36 remaining in the opening frame. Cody Monds received the secondary assist for his effort after winning the puck in the left-wing corner.

Following a lengthy delay while the door to Arizona State's bench was repaired, Clarkson went on the power play as Anthony Romano drew a hooking call on ASU's Matthew Kopperud. The Knights were unable to generate any shots on their advantage but continued their offensive pressure throughout the period. Brandon Tabakin gave Clarkson their second and final power play opportunity with 2:59 remaining on a slashing penalty. The Sun Devil penalty kill stayed strong, allowing only one shot and sent Clarkson to the locker room holding their one-goal advantage.

Erik Bargholtz sent the Golden Knights short-handed 1:58 into the second period, being called for a holding penalty in the defensive zone. The Golden Knights' penalty kill stood strong, with the best scoring opportunity of ASU's man advantage coming short-handed from Ryan Richardson following a timely block by Jack Judson. Shortly after returning to 5 on 5 play, Eric Ciccolini rang the second post of the night on a shot from the right circle that passed Semptimphelter but deflected out. Clarkson's puck luck quickly turned in their favor as a shot from Cody Monds deflected off the chest of a Sun Devil defender directly onto the stick of Ellis Rickwood, who cleanly tapped home a 2-0 lead with 14:33 left in the second period. Ryan Taylor also assisted on the zone entry.

Arizona State got their first of the evening on a shot from above the right circle, cutting the lead in half with 10:46 remaining in the middle frame. The score would stay 2-1 through the end of the period; however, a late Clarkson penalty from Oliver Moberg gave Arizona State's fifth-ranked power play life with just 20 seconds on the clock.

Arizona State stormed into the third period with a power play goal to equalize the game at 2-2 on their first shot of the advantage, 46 seconds into the final frame. The Sun Devils broke the tie late as Kyle Smolen found a rebound and gave ASU their first lead of the game. Clarkson pulled Austin Roden with 2 minutes remaining, but a quick turnover found the back of the net before Roden could get to the bench. The Sun Devils added one more empty net goal in the closing seconds, ending the contest 5-2.

Clarkson's power play finished 0-for-2, and their penalty kill went 1-for-2 in the loss. Austin Roden made 21 saves on the 24 shots he faced. Although they came up short, the burst of offensive chances and a fully healthy lineup offer optimism looking forward.

With the loss, the Golden Knights are now 8-6-1 on the season. They will look to rebound tomorrow as they face the 11th-ranked Massachusetts Minutemen, who fell 2-2 in a shootout against Cornell. Puck drop is set for 4:00 PM EST from the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.
