Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Post Biggest Goal Output of Season in 5-1 Victory Over Stonehill

Potsdam, NY – Three players posted multi-point games for the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team, as the Golden Knights extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a decisive 5-1 win over Stonehill on Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson won for the fifth time in six games and posted its highest scoring output of the 2023-24 season on Friday, moving to 8-5-1 overall. Stonehill dropped to 0-17 on the season. The Knights will take on the United States U18 Team on Saturday at 7:00 pm.

Despite possessing the puck for long periods in the first nine minutes of the contest, the Knights didn't have much to show for it against the Sky Hawks, with just a handful of attempts getting through on target. Clarkson initially had a chance on the power play just a couple of minutes into the game, but it was nullified by a whistle on the Knights 40 seconds in. Clarkson would get another chance on the power play midway through the period and the Green and Gold would not waste their chance. A few near misses kept Clarkson cycling around for another opportunity. One shot was tipped away by the Stonehill goaltender and the puck ended up floating along the boards to Mathieu Gosselin. He backhanded a no-look pass to Ryan Richardson, who quickly sent a pass to Jack Judson at the point. Judson then put the puck back in the center to Richardson, and Richardson sent a pass to Ayrton Martino at the right circle. Martino's one-time was true and Clarkson gained a 1-0 lead at 11:04.

Seven minutes later, Clarkson would again score late in the power play. A nifty ricochet off a Clarkson skate allowed the Knights to get back into the offensive zone, and the tired Stonehill defense couldn't keep up with the circling Knights. Near the blue line, Trey Taylor sent a pass over to Ryan Taylor, who took a few strides in, wristing a shot from the middle of the left circle to put the Knights up 2-0 at 18:07. Clarkson picked up another goal, this time even-strength, as the buzzer sounded to end the first period. The Knights were working the puck behind the net with less than six seconds to go before it found its way back in front. The extra pass turned out to work as the puck found the stick of Tristan Sarsland near the right circle. Sarsland took a split second to measure up his target, and whistled a wrist shot between the blocker and glove of Dylan Meilun, hitting the back of the net as the buzzer went off.

The second period started as quietly as the first, with just a few shots making it through either team's defense. Stonehill had a chance in close against Clarkson goalkeeper Austin Roden, but the grad student knocked it away and then stopped the rebound a moment later. Near the midway point of the period, Ellis Rickwood had a chance in close between the circles, but Meilun deflected the puck as it rattled around the crease before being cleared away.

Meilun was busy for a stretch of two minutes, making several stops in close, but eventually Clarkson picked up its fourth goal. From behind the net, the puck snuck out all the way to the blue line at the top of the slot to Dustyn McFaul. The captain calmly collected the puck, delayed his shot to clear some space and sent a wrist shot from the top of the left circle through traffic, finding the top right corner to make it 4-0 at 16:03 of the second.

The third period was reasonably quiet until the final minutes of the game. Clarkson was called for a slashing penalty, giving Stonehill its first power play chance in more than 50 minutes of game time, allowing the Sky Hawks an extra skater. Stonehill was finally able to get on the scoreboard late as Greg Japchen converted a shot from the slot at 16:19 with just a little over 20 seconds left in the power play. Clarkson made sure the final was a four-goal lead, however, winning the following faceoff and scoring only 19 seconds later when Eric Ciccolini scored off a rebound in front at 16:38.

The Knights doubled up Stonehill in shots, 36-18, and each team converted on 50% or better of their power play chances (2-for-3 for Clarkson, 1-for-2 for Stonehill). The Knights also dominated on faceoffs, winning 35 of 49 chances. Roden made 17 saves in the win, while Meilin stopped 31 shots for Stonehill. Offensively, Ayrton Martino had a goal and an assist, Eric Ciccolini matched Martino's output, and Jack Judson got on the scoresheet with two assists.
