CU Volleyball Preview - vs. Vassar/Bard (9/22-23)

After dropping four matches in Illinois, the Clarkson University Volleyball team is back to the friendly confines of Alumni Gymnasium, as the Golden Knights open up Liberty League play with home contests against Vassar College and Bard College this Friday and Saturday.

The Series: The Golden Knights surpassed Vassar several years ago in the all-time series and lead 24-14 in 38 meetings, but Clarkson has dominated since 2008, winning 23 of 26 matches. Clarkson is 18-0 all-time against Bard and hasn't lost a set since the Raptors joined the Liberty League. Bard has yet to reach the 20-point mark in a set against the Knights entering the conference over a decade ago.

Key Stats for Clarkson (5-4, 0-0 Liberty League): The Golden Knights rank 17th nationally in digs per set at 18.67 per game, which incidentally is where junior Abigail Spector ranks as an individual, averaging 5.70 digs per set. Spector was chosen to the Liberty League Honor Roll this week thanks to averaging 6.64 digs per set while the team was in Illinois. Sara Galante leads the team on offense with 3.30 kills per set to go along with 0.55 aces and 3.12 digs per game. Allyson Treichel is hitting .264 with 2.52 kills and 0.64 blocks per set, including nine solo blocks among her total of 21.

Key Stats for Vassar (5-5, 0-0 Liberty League): The Brewers have a pair of strong hitters in Holland Kaplan and Maura McAusland, with Kaplan averaging 3.16 kills per set and McAusland contributing 2.95 kills per game. Kaplan is also at 0.41 aces per set and 2.38 digs per set. Melia Voss runs the offense to the tune of 7.13 assists per game and Ellie Kogan averages 2.59 digs per set. Vassar has struggled a little on serve receive with a clip of .839, having seen opponents notch 103 total aces.

Key Stats for Bard (6-7, 0-0 Liberty League): With a solid effort on Friday, the Raptors could match their season win total from a year ago before September closes out. Ryan Lum leads the team in most categories, recording 2.75 kills, 2.48 digs, and a total of 30 aces through 13 matches. Emily Hall Smith (1.59 kills per set) and LaeAnna Riley (1.48 kills per set) also work as secondary offensive options. Like Vassar, the Raptors have been troubled on serve receive with a success rate of .838. Opponents have 137 aces, or 3.11 per set.
