Knights Improve to 3-0 in Conference, Split Versus Skidmore and Rochester

Saratoga Springs, NY – While the Clarkson University Volleyball team split on Friday evening, the Golden Knights won the key match of the day, beating Skidmore College in four sets in Liberty League action (24-26, 25-21, 25-16, 25-20) before falling to University of Rochester (25-22, 25-21, 25-14).

The Golden Knights moved to 8-5 on the season and 3-0 in the Liberty League. Clarkson will play another non-conference match on Saturday against Middlebury College.

Both teams produced solid offense in the first set, as Skidmore hit .310 (16-3-42) and Clarkson matched that figure (19-6-42), but it was a pair of mistakes at the end that allowed the Thoroughbreds to take the first set. Clarkson won 12 of the first 20 points, only to see Skidmore respond with a 9-1 run, with three kills from Maya Stolarz capping the streak. Skidmore eventually led by as many as seven, and was up by four on a set point, only to see the Knights battle back to tie the game. However, two straight unforced errors put Skidmore on top 26-24.

The offenses cooled in the second set, but again the Knights jumped out to a lead near the midway point, following block assists from Tess Sorel and Sara Galante which made it 13-8. The Knights edged out to a six-point lead twice 15-9, 17-11), but Skidmore rallied back to tie the set twice late. Clarkson rattled off four straight points to end the set, as Sara Galante recorded three kills down the stretch to end the game.

Set number three was in hand for the Knights for the majority of the time, as Clarkson held at least a three-point lead from 6-3 on in the set. An 8-2 run saw the Knights double up Skidmore (18-9) and Clarkson finished with that margin for the win. The fourth game mirrored the third, though Skidmore did have a late rally. Clarkson led 13-8 after block assists from Natalie Peacock and Sara Galante, and the lead expanded to eight twice (18-10, 22-14). However, the Thoroughbreds scored six of seven points to again drop the margin to just three, forcing the Knights to take a timeout. Out of the break, Clarkson quickly picked up a point on a service error and then ended the match with block assists thanks to Sorel and Galante.

Galante notched 15 kills, 10 digs, and five block assists in the win, while Allyson Treichel also chipped in 15 kills. Marin Hangliter contributed a near double-double with nine kills and 12 digs, and Tess Sorel hit .556 (5-0-9) with five block assists. Anna Mayer and Isabelle Crow split setting duties with 25 and 24 assists, respectively, while Abigail Spector notched 21 digs from the back row.

Versus Rochester, the Knights led in the opening set by a handful of points near the midway point (13-10), but the Yellowjackets won nine of the next 12 points to take a three-point advantage of their own. Clarkson came back within two a few times, but a kill from Ashley Cook ended the set.

The second set was tied seven times in the early going before Rochester finally got a foothold, and the Yellowjackets never relinquished the advantage. Clarkson was within one (21-20) on a kill from Isabelle Crow, only to see Rochester pick up kills from Caroline Hoag before ending the set on an ace from Ruby Moore.

Set number three was never really in doubt for the Yellowjackets, as they started off with an 11-2 lead. Clarkson battled back to within four (14-10), but that spurt was the last gasp as Rochester won seven of nine points to push the margin back to nine.

Against Rochester, Sara Galante notched eight kills and two aces. Isabelle Crow picked up 13 assists and 10 digs, Anna Mayer had 10 assists, and Abigail Spector recorded 18 digs.
