Knights Use Late Power Play Goal To Add Point In OT Loss
Clarkson's third period push was enough to send the game into overtime, but Brown was able to score in the five minute 3-on-3 period to steal the extra point by the final score 3-2.
The Golden Knights opened the scoring, as
Carter Rose tallied his first career goal.
Kaelan Taylor's stretch pass gave
Ayrton Martino a couple of passing options, which he used to smartly drop the puck to the freshman at 7:34. Clarkson would then head to the power play 54 seconds later. The man-advantage was able to generate a pair of shots on goal, but finished empty handed. Late in the first period,
Jesse Tucker was called for hooking with 2:01 remaining. Clarkson's penalty kill unit finished the period strong, holding their lead into the intermission.
The Bears took advantage in the second period, where they took a 2-1 lead. Brown's Tony Andreozzi tied the game 3:15 into the middle frame. Brown would then go back to the power play at 5:38 with
Ryan Richardson called for interference on an offensive zone penalty. Again the Golden Knight kill rallied, and the momentum carried into a Clarkson power play chance sending Brown to the box 41 seconds after the game returned to even strength. The Golden Knights fired shots from everywhere, adding four shots on goal, but the game remained tied. In the closing minutes of the period, Brown took their first lead of the game, scoring a power play goal at 18:46.Â
Clarkson was able to bounce back in the third period, using sustained offensive zone pressure to wear down the Bears defense. The Golden Knights received a late power play after a hit from behind on Tucker. Martino prevented a Bears' clearance after the faceoff with a flashy jump, gloving the puck down from high in the air. Martino then strung together a series of tight passes, giving
Noah Beck the puck in the high slot. Beck wired his first of the season to tie the game at 16:11.
Anthony Romano also picked up an assist on the play.
After time in regulation ran out the game went to overtime. Clarkson was able to possess the opening faceoff, springing
Trey Taylor up the ice. Taylor's shot attempt was saved by the goaltender, who kept the play moving. As Martino and Taylor went off for a line change, the Bears quickly rushed up the ice, and Max Scott's wrist shot from the right circle passed Roden to give Brown the 3-2 overtime win.
Clarkson's power play finished the game 1-for-3, their penalty kill was 3-for-4.
Austin Roden stopped 17 shots in the loss. Clarkson now looks forward to next weekend's Route 11 Rivalry series with St. Lawrence, as they return home next Friday, January 26. Puck drop will be at 7:00 PM EST, catch the games on ESPN+ or B99.3 fm.
