Hanson Scores 23 Kills in Knights Four-Set Win Over Union

Schenectady, NY – Scoring the final five points of the fourth set, the Clarkson University Volleyball team avoided a fifth to claim a 25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 26-24 victory over Union College in Liberty League action Friday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-12 overall and 4-3 in the Liberty League, while Union dropped to 15-7 and 3-3 in conference matches. Clarkson closes out its league schedule on Saturday when it takes on Bard College, and with a victory the Green and Gold will clinch the third seed in the conference tournament.

At the start of the opening set, the two teams essentially traded points, tied 7-7. Clarkson then picked up five straight, all on kills, with the first coming from Marin Hangliter, the middle three from Grace Hanson, and then one more from Allyson Treichel to make it 12-7. Union drew back to within three on five occasions before Clarkson went on another run to put the Knights within one point (24-17) of a significant win in the first set. The Garnet Chargers were not done though, scoring four straight to put a scare into the Knights, though Hangliter put down a kill to end the threat.

Grace Hanson was active with seven kills in the first set, but Emily Alexander had the highest efficiency with three kills on four swings.

Set two saw two large runs put each team on its heels. Clarkson led early 5-4 only to see Union go on an 8-2 run and force the Knights to take a timeout. The Chargers scored one more to make it 13-7, but Clarkson responded with an 11-1 run. A block and then a kill from Treichel tied the set at 14, then three straight kills from the outside by Grace Hanson put Clarkson on top. Union briefly put a halt to the run, but the Knights would not allow another comeback to occur as Tess Sorel notched a kill and block to end the set.

At the start of the third it appeared as if Clarkson had the momentum on its side, scoring the first three points and eyeing a potential sweep. Union quickly recovered and gained the lead, causing the teams to then seesaw back and forth with small runs. Clarkson led by two (10-8), but Union responded with 10 of the next 11 points, picking up points from different offensive options. That burst was enough to claim the set, 25-18.

The fourth started off like the previous game as Clarkson scored the opening three points, but this time Union quickly came back and led throughout the majority of the set. It was last tied at 8-8, but Union gained a modest advantage at 16-11. Clarkson rallied to within one on a couple of occasions, but the Chargers extended their advantage back to as many as six (22-16). It looked like the hosts would pull away to force a fifth set, up 24-21 after a block from Erin Stevens and Maddie McCarron, but that would prove to be the final point scored for Union. On set points for the Garnet Chargers, Clarkson got a kill from Treichel in the middle, an ace from Olivia Baxter, and a roll shot into the middle of the court by Grace Hanson to tie the set at 24. Baxter then quickly picked up another ace and Treichel hammered down another kill in the middle to stun the Garnet Chargers in the fourth, 26-24.

Grace Hanson was busy on the outside for the Knights, scoring 23 kills overall, while Allyson Treichel picked up 13 kills, three aces, and five total blocks. Ashley Currier recorded 50 assists, 22 digs and four aces in the match, with her defensive numbers just short of the 26 digs from Abigail Spector and 25 by Cecilia Velardi.

For Union, Shannon McGrath had 16 kills and 13 digs, Allie Kronenberg recorded 34 assists and 11 digs to go along with six block assists, and Maddie McCarron (eight blocks) and Erin Stevens (seven blocks) also produced at the net. Georgia Pool also notched 23 digs.
