Knights Advance to Liberty League Semins with Four-Set Win Over Skidmore

Potsdam, NY – Cecilia Velardi led a strong service game with seven of 14 aces for the Clarkson University Volleyball team as the Golden Knights posted a four-set win (25-12, 20-25, 25-19, 25-20) over Skidmore College in the Liberty League's First Round playoff contest Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 13-14 overall and advance to the Liberty League Semifinals where they will face second-seeded William Smith College at 4:00 pm on Friday in Ithaca, NY. Skidmore saw its season come to a close at 12-16.

Clarkson got off to a strong start in the opening set with an 8-3 lead, but it was an 8-0 stretch a few moments later that broke the set open. Velardi had three aces in that run to put the tally at 17-5, giving the Golden Knights plenty of breathing room to cruise to an opening set victory.

Skidmore recovered to take the second set using some timely runs of its own. Tied at 5-5, the Thoroughbreds rattled off five straight, ending on block assists from Maya Stolarz and Rudi Reyes. Clarkson came back to tie the set at 13 and then took the lead at 16-15, only to see Skidmore score four in a row as Jazlin Chen had a pair of kills and two attack errors by the Knights gave the visitors a little bit of space. That was enough to help the Thoroughbreds pull through, ending the set with block assists from Reyes and Chen.

The third set was close up to the midway point with the teams tying 10 separate times up to 13-13. It was from there that the Golden Knights gained a foothold, putting up seven points in a row, including a pair of kills from freshman Grace Hanson. That margin was nearly the ending point as well, with Clarkson earning a six-point win thanks to a service error by the Thoroughbreds.

A similar mid-set run by Clarkson allowed the Knights to pull away in what proved to be the deciding game. Up by just one when Chen recorded a kill for Skidmore, Clarkson scored five straight points thanks to two blocks, two straight kills, and then an ace from Olivia Baxter, putting the tally at 17-11. The Thoroughbreds climbed back to within two, but Clarkson would allow them to get no closer, stretching the margin to a safer distance and ending the game and match on yet another ace from Velardi.

Velardi posted 16 digs along with her season-best seven aces. Marin Hangliter led the team with 14 kills, Allyson Treichel had 10 kills and four block assists and Tess Sorel also contributed seven blocks. Ashley Currier was close to a double-double with 35 assists and nine digs and Abigail Spector chipped in 20 digs.

For Skidmore, Jazlin Chen hit .367 in the match and recorded 13 kills and four blocks. Natalie Pedersen was next with nine kills for the Thoroughbreds offense. Catriona Hoelperl had 22 assists and Athena Braverman notched 28 digs.
