Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Late Overtime Score Sends Knights to Defeat Versus Colgate, 4-3

Potsdam, NY – A goal that ricocheted off a stick and a pad cost the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team a chance at earning an extra point during a shootout that would never come, as the Golden Knights suffered a 4-3 overtime defeat to Colgate University in ECAC Hockey action Saturday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 16-15-1 and 10-9-1 in league games, and the team is still tied for fourth in points (31) in the ECAC standings. Colgate saw its overall record improve to 14-14-4 while its league mark improved to 11-7-2.

The final goal of the game came during the three-on-three overtime session after neither team had put together scoring chances beyond the normal shots on net. Daniel Panetta cycled around with less than a minute to go in the extra session and finally took a shot from the top of the slot. The puck clipped one stick of a Clarkson defender then hit the upper sock pad of another and tipped past Austin Roden to give Colgate a fluky game-winner.

Clarkson finished the game with a 22-16 lead in shots on goal and a 63-40 edge in total shots. Both teams were scoreless on the power play, while the Knights won 31 of the 56 faceoffs.

Things were quiet for most of the first period as neither team could get much going on offense. Clarkson did have three shots on goal in the opening two minutes, all stopped by Colgate's Carter Gylander, and the Knights finished the period with six shots to just two for the opposition, but it was the Raiders that would come away with a goal late in the frame. After Colgate carried the puck in deep, the two teams fought for possession behind the Clarkson net. From there the puck was stolen away by Simon Labelle, who came back around to the bottom of the right circle, shooting at a sharp angle and just sneaking the puck inside the post to put the Raiders up 1-0 at the 18:20 mark.

The start of the second saw little in the way on offense, but that quickly changed five minutes in and didn't stop for the rest of the period. Clarkson gained possession near the bottom of the left circle with Ayrton Martino sending the puck out in front to Jesse Tucker near the slot. Tucker got a touch, but couldn't get a shot off as the puck trickled through the slot. From there, Noah Beck beat his defender to the puck with a quick step and wristed a shot past Gylander on his stick side at 5:16.

Just a minute later, however, Colgate won the faceoff in the Knights' defensive end after an icing call and took advantage very quickly. The Raiders had the puck near the bottom of the right circle where Labelle passed the puck into the slot to Ross Mitten. A seemingly harmless pass from Mitten went to Dom Foglia at the left point, and Foglia threw the puck on net where a screen may have helped the shot make its way past Emmett Croteau at 6:24.

After Colgate's second goal, Clarkson had several fiery shifts that resulted in numerous shots, but no goals. That would change near the midway point of the period as Ryan Richardson carried the puck up ice. It appeared as if he was hooked between the red and blue lines, but with no call Richardson quickly regained his footing and gained possession near the end line. From there, he skated to the back of the net and found Dustyn McFaul for the one-timer in the slot at 11:59.

Each team picked up one more goal before the period was out, doing so with quick counter attacks. Jake Schneider stole a centering pass in the Colgate defensive end and skated up through the neutral zone, finding Daniel Panetta. After a few strides, Panetta wristed a shot from the top of the left circle past Croteau to put Colgate back on top once again. The lead, however, was short-lived for the Raiders, as Clarkson tied the game up a minute later. The Knights skated in to the Colgate zone, and though the Raiders looked like they might clear the puck, Anthony Romano stole the puck and ripped a shot from the top of the right circle, with the puck trickling through the five hole and into the back of the net at 19:22, tying the game 3-3.

Although Colgate had some chances on relief goaltender Austin Roden in the third period, it was Clarkson that had the best scoring opportunities of the period. About eight minutes in Jesse Tucker redirected a shot near the slot that ended up clinking off the post. Ninety seconds later, the Knights had a two-on-one where it appeared Eric Ciccolini would score on a backhand, but Colgate net minder Carter Gylander got a toe on it with a sprawling pad save, quickly covering up the puck before another shot could be taken. Colgate had one final chance, winning the faceoff with 1.7 seconds left from the right circle, but the slap shot was denied by Roden.

Roden recorded seven saves over the course of the third period and overtime, while Croteau stopped five shots in the first two periods for the Knights. Gylander finished with 19 saves for Colgate.
