Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Knights Fall to Second-Ranked William Smith, 15-8

Potsdam, NY – Falling into a hole early on, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team played essentially even with second-ranked William Smith for the final 40 minutes, but could not get back within striking distance in a 15-8 defeat to the Herons on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record sink to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the Liberty League, while William Smith remained unblemished at 11-0 and 5-0. Clarkson plays four of its final five conference games on the road, including its next contest at RIT on April 13th.

Senior Madelynn Barnum opened the scoring less than 90 seconds into the game to give Clarkson an early lead, but William Smith responded with a goal just 30 seconds later. Near the midway mark, Maddie Montgomery and Natalie Daniels scored a minute apart to put the Herons up by two, and William Smith scored two more to close out the quarter, including a Hannah Evans goal with one second left on the clock. Two more goals in the first seven minutes of the second quarter pushed the Herons' margin to six (7-1) before Clarkson made a move. Julia Lavarnway scored back-to-back goals for the Knights midway through the quarter and Barnum's goal in the final minute allowed Clarkson to be within five at the break.

In the third, Clarkson picked up goals from Hailey Millington and Lavarnway to pull the Knights within four (10-6) with just over two minutes to go. However, William Smith took advantage of two cards by Clarkson players, scoring while up a player in the waning seconds of the third and then a minute into the fourth. That proved enough to keep Clarkson at a reasonably safe distance, and the Herons finished with a seven-goal victory.

Lavarnway finished with four points on three goals and an assist while both Millington and Barnum had two goals for the Knights. Millington also was busy on draws, winning 11 of them, and Barnum created four turnovers and also added two groundballs. Meredith James also scooped up four groundballs, while Jennaca McGill stopped nine shots and added five groundballs in the Clarkson crease. Additionally, Barnum's two goals put her at 50 on the season in that category, making her just the fifth player in program history to score that many in one campaign. She also did it in the fewest games (11), with the previous fastest player being Alyssa Cristaldi in 2013 (15 games).

For William Smith, Allie McGinty led the team with six points, including five assists. Natalie Daniels scored five times and had five draws, and Maddie Montgomery recorded four goals. Molly Davis also produced four draw controls, two caused turnovers, and two groundballs. Maura Smeader had three saves.

William Smith finished with a 32-17 edge in shots (24-11 shots on goal) and had a 19-15 advantage in groundballs. Clarkson won 14 of the 25 draws.
