Rochester, N.Y.- Defenses reigned supreme as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie with RIT, Saturday afternoon, despite having to play a majority of the game down a player.
Clarkson moves to 3-4-2 overall, 0-1-1 in the league in the team's first scoreless tie of the season.
Both teams managed to create shooting opportunities in the opening five minutes, calling on both goalies to make saves early on. In the 15th minute, Clarkson was forced down to 10 players as a RIT forward through on goal was brought down by Paige Ford. With the foul deemed credible for a red card, the Golden Knights faced a tough task with 75 minutes remaining in the contest. The shot off the freekick, nearly opened the scoring for the hosts, as the ball struck the outside of the right post, and rolled out of play.
Clarkson managed a few chances through the remainder of the opening half, with one of the better coming in the 41st minute after a quick counter-attack. Emily Davis managed to win possession in the RIT defending third of the field, working her way through the defense with a few quick touches before firing a shot from just outside the 18 yard box that was collected by the Tiger keeper.
Into the second half, the Knight's managed to come within inches of breaking the deadlock in the 53rd minute. A 2v2 break for Clarkson saw the ball fall to the feet of Emma Robinson who unleashed a dipping shot from about 22 yards out which hit the top of the woodwork and out of play.
The remainder of the half continued with a majority of the action coming in the middle of the field as neither side managed a shot on goal until the 83rd minute, when Molly DiCaprio was called upon to make a great diving stop to her right, palming the ball out of danger. The hosts had another chance in the final minute, as a long-shot from about 30 yards out drifted to DiCaprio's right, where she was able to pluck it out of the air and keep the shutout intact.
DiCaprio made nine saves in net for Clarkson, leading the defense in dealing with an extra attacker while Emily Sanchez made three for the Tigers.
RIT led in shots (14-7), and shots on goal (9-3). Clarkson returns to action October 5th, hosting William Smith in another Liberty League contest, the team's first home game since September 1st.
