Martino Nets Hat Trick in Knights 7-4 Win Over Yale

New Haven, CT – Ayrton Martino recorded a hat trick and Talon Sigurdson scored the first two goals of the game to lift the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team to a 7-4 victory over Yale University in ECAC Hockey play Friday night.

The Golden Knights remained unbeaten and untied on the road at 8-0-0 to improve to 13-6-2 overall and 7-2-0 in league play. The Bulldogs dropped to 4-11-1 and 3-7-1. Clarkson faces Brown University on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights jumped on the scoreboard in the first minute, immediately putting the home team on its heels. From the Clarkson defensive end, the puck was sent forward by Tate Taylor up to Shawn O'Donnell, who skated in with the initial rush only to have it broken up. Talon Sigurdson was there to pick up the loose puck as Yale goalie Jack Stark lost his stick. It likely mattered little, as Sigurdson's shot went to the right side and ticked in off a Yale player just 31 seconds into the game.

Sigurdson was the goal scorer once again near the midway point of the period, starting the play without touching the puck. Sigurdson applied some pressure on a Yale defender with the puck slipping out to the slot for another Bulldog. On the attempted clear, however, the puck bounced off another Yale player and found the stick of Ellis Rickwood, who quickly found Sigurdson in the slot for the score at 11:17.

As the first goal was scored early, the Knights picked up another goal late in the period, providing the Knights a strong opening frame. With 12 seconds to go, Luke Pakulak won the faceoff in the Yale defensive end and tipped it back to Tate Taylor. From the back of the left circle, Taylor took his time to get into the slot and ripped a wrist shot through traffic to score at 19:53, making it 3-0.

The Bulldogs would not sulk at the start of the second, scoring two special team goals to get back into the contest. The first came on the power play when Julian Frias kept whacking at the puck in the crease. Ethan Langenegger was down low, stopping the first try with his stick, and then denying a second again with his stick even with the ice. The third try from Frias found the smallest of openings, somehow sneaking underneath Langenegger to make it 3-1 at 1:31 of the second.

Seven minutes later, the Bulldogs were trying to kill off a penalty and instead ended up with a shorthanded marker. The puck was in the Clarkson defensive end briefly and was sent forward for another Golden Knights offensive push, but Briggs Gammill intercepted it and flipped it back through the neutral zone. Elan Bar-Lev-Wise was still trying to get back into the play defensively but found himself alone for a breakaway, skating in and going glove side against Langenegger to put the score at 3-2 at 8:14.

The goals kept coming, this time with the Knights responding at the 11:00 mark. Ryan Richardson passed the puck forward and Ellis Rickwood tracked it down behind the net. After winning a brief battle for the puck, he tipped it back in front of the net, finding Ayrton Martino crashing the net uncovered and Martino did the rest to return the margin to two goals, 4-2.

The third period continued to see the scoreboard change in the early going. It was Clarkson that picked up a goal first, again creating a quick chance off a giveaway. Ryan Richardson battled shoulder to shoulder for possession of the puck in the neutral zone and won the test, tipping the puck forward to Ellis Rickwood. He then carried the puck into the offensive zone and one more quick pass located Martino in the slot for a 1-on-1, with the senior converting on a backhand at 5:41.

Just three minutes later, Yale dropped the lead back to two goals as some quick passing around the point kept Ethan Langenegger's eyes busy following the puck. One pass from the left point to the bottom of the right circle found Ronan O'Donnell, and he went high past Langenegger at 8:41, putting the tally at 5-3.

Yale had a chance late on the power play, but the Knights were able to kill that off before going on the power play themselves, which resulted in a third goal and the hat trick for Martino. The puck worked around the outside with Rickwood locating Martino on the right dot where his one-timer snuck inside the near post before Jack Stark could close off the empty space.

It would seem that the third Martino goal would have ended the contest, but Yale kept itself alive when Ronan O'Donnell scored at 16:54, breathing a little life back into the Bulldogs' chances, with some extra opportunity coming when the Knights were called for a penalty in the last two minutes. However, it was Clarkson that would score in the waning moments. Down two skaters on the 6-on-4, Trey Taylor had a shot from neutral ice that hit the post on an empty net, but just eight seconds later Erik Bargholtz had a shot all the way from the opposite end of the rink, sliding in the shorthanded empty-netter at 18:57.

Yale ended with a 33-25 edge in shots on goal and both teams scored once on the power play and once shorthanded. Langenegger made 29 saves for the Knights and Stark had 18 stops for Yale.
