Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Last Minute Goal Lifts Harvard Past Knights, 2-1

Potsdam, NY – Two third-period goals, including one in the final minute, allowed Harvard University to gain a victory on the road, downing the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team 2-1 Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in league games, while Harvard edged up to 3-1-1 and 2-1-0.

Harvard got the game-winner with less than a minute to go in the game, as Mick Thompson worked hard on the forecheck to gain possession and sending the puck out to Casey Severo, who scored with only 53 seconds to go.

Though the first period was without a goal, both teams had their chances, especially near the midway point of the stanza when the ice opened up. Clarkson possessed the puck in its offensive zone for a bit with a near score by Luka Sukovic before Harvard nearly got a mini-breakaway that was denied by the combination of Jared Mangan and Ty Brassington. That began a turn towards the other end of the ice only to see the Knights' chances go wide with near misses. Harvard again had a mini-breakout as Aidan Lane skated in alone only to be denied by Shane Soderwall.

Although the action was frenetic in the middle of the period, the best chance came on a backhand by Remi Gelinas when he patiently held the puck across the crease and had the goalie beat, only to be denied by post near the right circle with a little over six minutes remaining.

Clarkson got on the board early in the second period on its forecheck. Harvard had the puck beneath its goal and tried to flip the puck out, but Talon Siguardson put pressure on another Crimson player near the left side boards at the circle, forcing the puck to leak out near the slot. Ryan Bottrill collected the puck and skated to his right with one stride, going top shelf with a wrist shot just 40 seconds into the frame.

That goal proved to be a key one, as Clarkson spent nearly six minutes on the penalty kill during the second period. Harvard put a few chances on the goal during its power play opportunities, but all were turned aside by Shane Soderwall. More importantly, during the tail end of a 3:47 stretch on the penalty kill, with 13 seconds of it being a 5-on-3, the Knights did an excellent job in reducing Harvard's chances by clearing the zone before the Crimson could set up its offense in an attempt to tie the score.

In the third, Harvard had the better of the scoring opportunities, though its best two came in odd situations. With the puck coming down from high in the air, Justin Solovey nearly chopped it in from the slot but couldn't quite get a clean hack at the puck. About a minute later, Mason Langenbrunner took a hard shot from just inside the blue line on the right side, and the attempt was redirected off the top of the crossbar and out of play.

A long stretch without a whistle midway through the period saw both teams buzzing along and eventually Harvard was able to tie the score on a strong individual effort from Heikki Ruohonen. Receiving a seemingly harmless short pass near the blue line in the Harvard defensive zone, Ruohonen skated in 2-on-4 and went from the slot to the right side, circling around the Clarkson defenders to create an opportunity. He went through the low slot and had his initial shot denied by the skate of Soderwall, but Ruohonen stuck with it and tapped in the rebound at 13:48.

The game appeared to be headed to overtime with the two teams trying to avoid the situation with attempts late in the third, and it was Harvard that would luck out with a goal in the final minute. After forcing a turnover behind the net, the puck found its way out to the left circle where Casey Severo was able to gain possession, throwing a shot on net that Shane Soderwall never saw due to a moving screen in front, the puck sneaking five-hole with only 53 seconds to go in the contest.

Clarkson ended the game with a 36-24 advantage in shots on goal (65-49 overall) while Harvard edged the Knights in faceoffs by one, 27-26. Soderwall finished with 22 saves for Clarkson, and the Crimson's Ben Charette ended up with 35 stops.
