Three-Goal Outburst In Third Leads Knights Past Cornell, 4-1

Potsdam, NY – Three goals in a stretch of less than two minutes in the opening part of the third period helped the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team return to Potsdam with a 4-1 win over Cornell University on Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights picked up their first win in league since early November in knocking off the 17th-ranked Big Red, improving to 6-11-0 overall and 2-5-0 in ECAC Hockey play while Cornell fell to 6-4-0 and 5-2-0.

Clarkson knocked in three goals between 6:24 and 8:17 in the third as freshman Remi Gelinas and Owen Van Steensel scored only 17 seconds apart and Shawn O'Donnell wrapped up the three-goal burst to give the Knights the victory.

To start the game, it appeared as if Cornell got on the scoreboard in the opening five minutes. Michael Fisher ripped a shot from the high slot that was redirected past Shane Soderwall. However, after a review, it was ruled that there was goalie interference and the score was removed from the Big Red's tally.

Clarkson took advantage of the newly tied game by taking the lead 90 seconds after the Cornell goal was taken off the board. Jace Letourneau intercepted the puck in the neutral zone near center ice and skated in along the right side, eventually taking a dot-shot from the right circle and beating Alexis Cournoyer on his glove side just inside the near post at 6:33.

Shortly after the Knights broke through, Cornell tied the game less than 20 seconds into its first power play try of the game. Soderwall stopped a pair of shots from the right circle, but the second rebound bounced out to the right slot for Jonathan Castagna, who ripped a shot past the Clarkson netminder before he could recover from the previous save, knotting the game up at 1-1 at 8:13.

Clarkson had three power play opportunities in the second period, but was unable to take the lead. Cornell controlled most of the middle stanza, outshooting Clarkson 12-3 for the first 15 minutes of the period before the shots on goal number evened up a little. The best scoring chances from the Big Red came when Charlie Major hit a pipe around seven minutes in, and then a flurry of shots against Soderwall with just over five minutes to go in the period were flipped aside by Soderwall, as he made several impressive saves in a stretch of 20 seconds.

The Knights scored twice in quick succession early on in the third period. The first came on what looked like a lost play as William Bishop circled around the right side to the goal line and lost the puck, just as Remi Gelinas lost his footing and slipped to the ice in front. Both players recovered, however, as Bishop regained the puck and tapped it off the back of the net where Erik Bargholtz collected it and passed to Gelinas near the slot and right circle. A quick one-timer from Gelinas put the Knights up 2-1 at 6:24.

Previously in the game, it was Cornell that quickly rallied with a goal, but instead it was the Golden Knights that tallied in short order. Right after the next faceoff, Clarkson took control and brought the puck back into the Cornell zone where Owen Van Steensel ripped a shot over the left shoulder of Cournoyer at 6:41.

The Knights picked up another key goal only 90 seconds later. After a near miss by Cornell, the Green and Gold went the other way in transition. Ryan Bottrill flipped the puck forward to Justin Cote in the neutral zone to create a 2-on-2, and Cote spun with a backhand pass to a trailing Shawn O'Donnell in the slot, and he ripped a shot for Clarkson's third goal in less than two minutes, making it 4-1 at 8:17.

Although Cornell emptied its net for the final three minutes of the contest, the Big Red was unable to sneak one through the Clarkson defense in that time.

Cornell ended the game with a 34-29 lead in shots on goal and held the Knights scoreless on six power-play tries, while the Big Red went 1-for-3 with the man advantage. Shane Soderwall had another solid game with 33 saves while Cournoyer made 25 stops.
