Five Different Players Score in Knights Key Win at Colgate

Hamilton, NY – For the seventh consecutive game, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team scored at least three goals, this time putting up that many in the second period alone, as the Golden Knights cruised to a 5-3 ECAC Hockey victory over Colgate University Saturday night.

The Golden Knights clinched a top four spot in the ECAC Hockey playoffs and the bye the first round bye that goes along with it, improving to 20-9-3 overall and 14-5-1 in league play. The Raiders fell to 16-13-3 and 11-7-2. Clarkson hosts Quinnipiac and Princeton next weekend.

Clarkson's strong offensive roll of late got going early once again, as the Knights scored less than seven minutes into the game while on the power play. Ellis Rickwood had a hand in forcing a turnover behind the goal and a Colgate defender tried to flip the puck out of the zone, but the soft attempt went right to the stick of Trey Taylor, who easily finished off the play at the 6:48 mark. Only six minutes later, Clarkson scored even strength on a beautiful blind drop pass from below the goal line by Ryan Bottrill, locating Talon Sigurdson for an easy one-timer in close, making it 2-0 at 13:25.

Colgate got a goal back just a minute later while on the power play. A faceoff win from the left circle allowed the Raiders to put together an offensive set and it medium-paced shot from the point by Reid Irwin found enough space through traffic to elude Clarkson goaltender Ethan Langenegger at 14:27.

The Golden Knights all but put the game away with a strong second period, scoring three goals in a stretch of nine minutes. The first came near the midway point of the frame when a hard shot from the top of the slot made its way through all the skaters and past the goal, banging off the glass, and right there was Ayrton Martino to craftily tap the puck in at 9:48. Four minutes later, Clarkson scored in transition when the Knights regained possession near the far blue line, with the puck scooting up to Ryan Richardson. The captain had options while skating up the left side boards, but ended up keeping the puck himself, whistling a shot over the right shoulder of Andrew Takacs at 13:35. After five more minutes ticked off the game clock, the Knights scored their second power play goal of the game and third goal of the period overall when Ellis Rickwood one-timed a shot from the middle slot at 18:55.

In the third period, Colgate pulled its goalie while on a power play to get an extra skater on the ice, but the Raiders attempt came up empty while the Knights nearly got a fourth shorthanded goal from Garrett Dahm. Instead, the Raiders would have to wait to get on the scoreboard again, doing so with 6:15 left in the game and then again in the final minute with the game already decided.

Clarkson finished with a small edge in shots on goal (37-35) though the Knights weren't looking to score as much late in the contest. Langenegger made 32 saves while Takacs stopped 32 in his crease.

A day after becoming the first Clarkson player since the 2017-18 season to score 20 goals in a season, Ayrton Martino became the first Golden Knight skater since the 2018-19 season to amass 40 points in a campaign, with the last two being Nico Sturm (45) and Haralds Egle (40) accomplishing the feat in that season.
