Bottrill Scores Twice in Third, Including Game-Winner in Final Minute, to Lift Clarkson Past Harvard, 3-2

Potsdam, NY – Junior Ryan Bottrill netted a pair of goals in the third period, including one with only 27.6 seconds to go in the contest, as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team came back twice from one-goal deficits to claim a 3-2 win over Harvard University in game one of the ECAC Quarterfinal round Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights moved to within one win of a trip to Lake Placid, improving to 22-10-3 on the season while Harvard dipped to 12-16-3. The two teams play again on Saturday with a 4:00 pm start.

In the final two minutes of the game, both goalies made some excellent saves to keep the game tied and it appeared as if the contest would head to overtime. Clarkson made sure that wouldn't be the case, earning its first lead of the game in the final 30 seconds. Harvard cleared the puck out of its defensive zone with around 35 seconds remaining, but Tate Taylor wouldn't allow the puck to go too far, picking up possession near the red line and then going cross ice to the Harvard blue line for Ayrton Martino, straddling it to stay on side. Martino then threw a shot to the opposite post with Bottrill crossing, and Bottrill got just enough of the puck to tip it past Koskenvuo with only 27.6 seconds remaining in the contest.

At the start of Friday's contest, both team's defenses showed up in the early going, keeping shots to a minimum, but a strong second effort for Harvard kept the puck in the Clarkson defensive zone, resulting in a goal near the eight-minute mark of the opening period. Lucas St. Louis challenged for the puck near the blue line and chipped it forward where Casey Severo took possession near the top of the left circle. He passed the puck down near the goal line to Philip Tresca, who surveyed his options and patiently waited for the skaters to fill lanes, eventually finding Mick Thompson in the high slot. Thompson then rifled a shot past Clarkson goaltender Ethan Langenegger at 7:44 to give the Crimson an early 1-0 lead.

About six minutes after the goal, Clarkson had its best chance of the opening period when Harvard was whistled for a penalty. During the two-minute power play, the Knights didn't have any grade-A opportunities, though a handful of passes and near misses skipped the heartbeat of a few of the Harvard faithful in attendance.

At the start of the second, the Crimson were buzzing with activity, but most of their shots were wide or blocked. It wasn't until five minutes into the period that Harvard put one on net to force Langenegger to make a save, but after that Harvard was busy against the Knights, putting six on the Clarkson goal in a stretch of less than two minutes. At the midway point of the period, Clarkson was called for an infraction, allowing Harvard to push hard against the Knights on offense, but the Knights did an excellent job of keeping the Crimson away from the goal, though Mason Langenbrunner's shot at the close of the penalty caused Langenegger to slide across the crease for a late denial, keeping the game at 1-0.

Once off the penalty kill, the Knights had long stretches of possession and even when they lost the puck, Harvard wouldn't hold the puck for long as a few strong hits knocked the Crimson off any kind of extended rush. In the final two minutes, both goalies produced some strong saves, and a late penalty put Clarkson on the power play, but the Knights couldn't cash in before the intermission.

With the power play continuing into the third period, Clarkson was able to tie the score on a final rush. Ayrton Martino carried the puck into the zone before dropping the puck back to Ryan Bottrill at the point. Bottrill then skated to the left circle looking for a teammate in front of the crease, but the pass was broken up. Fortunately for the Knights, the puck came right back to the stick of Bottrill, who was able to bury a shot with his forehand with only 22 seconds left on the power play chance.

Less than five minutes later, the Knights found themselves back down by a goal. After a tripping penalty, Harvard took its time passing the puck around the perimeter trying to set up a shot. Eventually Ian Moore had the puck at the top of the slot near the point with a medium-paced wrister, but his shot went through the traffic of five total players from both teams that Langenegger never saw the puck, putting Harvard up 2-1 at 6:02.

Clarkson had an immediate response, tying the game only 42 seconds later. An offensive zone faceoff for the Knights saw Clarkson keep the puck in the zone, though Harvard had a brief chance to clear, but Ryan Richardson won the puck on the left boards. He then sent a pass into the slot to Ayrton Martino, who flipped a pass straight forward to Ellis Rickwood right in front of the crease. Rickwood's first try was denied by Aku Koskenvuo, but the rebound came right back to Rickwood's stick and he flipped it up and over the Harvard goalie at 6:44, knotting the game up at 2-2 and setting up Bottrill's late-game heroics.

Clarkson finished the game with a 28-17 lead in shots on goal and a 60-41 edge in total shots. Both teams went 1-for-2 on the power play. Langenegger made 15 stops for the Knights and Koskenvuo had 25 saves for Harvard.
