William Smith Stops Clarkson's Winning Streak with 3-0 Win

Geneva, NY – A slow start put the Clarkson University Volleyball team on its heels early as William Smith College swept the Golden Knights in the Liberty League opener, 25-10, 25-14, 25-21.

The Golden Knights fell back below .500 on the year at 6-7 while the Herons improved to 11-1. Clarkson will take on Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon to finish off its weekend road trip.

In the opening set, the Herons showed why they have one of the top offenses in the region, hitting .407 overall and taking a 16-2 lead early. With William Smith's offense clicking, the Knights did not have much of a chance since on their side of the net the team had more errors than it did kills for a negative hitting percentage.

The second set was a similar start with the Herons winning the first five points, but the Knights wouldn't let the game get away so quickly. The Knights were within striking distance near the midway point, but a 5-0 run by the Herons, all on assorted Clarkson miscues, allowed William Smith to pull away with a double-digit lead.

Clarkson finally righted itself in the third set, sticking close for most of the game and getting to within one point twice near the middle of the contest (13-12 and 14-13). Malya Sayre delivered three straight kills to provide the Herons with some breathing room, but Clarkson would not go away, getting back to within two late (22-20) after an ace from Olivia Baxter. However, a pair of attack errors returned the margin to four, and William Smith put the match away with a kill from Jaylynn McCarthy.

Grace Hanson led the Clarkson offense with seven kills while Ainslie Reimer had the best hitting percentage thanks to four kills (.200). Ashley Currier recorded 18 assists and Olivia Baxter added in 11 digs.

For William Smith, Malya Sayre hit .294 in the match on a 16-6-34 line, but it was Hope Von Dohlen (.625, 5-0-8) and Arielle Newsome (.667, 8-0-12) who had the top percentages. Delainy Williams posted 35 assists and three aces and Emily Fulton recorded nine digs.
