Clarkson Women Start ECAC Hockey Slate Against Harvard & Dartmouth

PDF of weekly release

After two bounce-back victories, the eighth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team will try to continue the momentum against conference opponents as Harvard and Dartmouth come to Potsdam in the opening weekend of ECAC Hockey play at Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights host the Crimson at 3:00 p.m on Friday and the Big Green on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Led by ninth-year head coach Matt Desrosiers and assistant coaches Britni Smith and Tony Maci, Clarkson is 4-3-1 through the first four weeks of the season. Last weekend saw the Golden Knights go on the road and earn consecutive 3-1 wins over New Hampshire.

On Saturday, Clarkson was in an early 1-0 hole against the Wildcats, but a goal by captain Savannah Harmon tied the game and then Corie Jacobson's career-high third goal gave Clarkson the lead. Michaela Pejzlova added an insurance goal for the Green and Gold in the third period.

Sunday's game was the inverse of Saturday's as Clarkson jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jessica Gillham. Harmon added a goal to make the score 2-0 after the first period. New Hampshire cut the lead in half, but Harmon struck again to give Clarkson a 3-1 cushion. It was the first multi-goal game of Harmon's collegiate career.

Along with Harmon, fellow captain Cayley Mercer recorded three points in the two games against New Hampshire and now has a team high seven points on two goals and five assists. Mercer now has 123 career points which is the fifth best total in Clarkson history.

Clarkson has struggled on the power-play this season, converting just 12 percent of its opportunities. That rate is the 20th best in the country while the Golden Knights' penalty kill is 23rd, with a percentage of 83.0. Rhyen McGill and Josiane Pozzebon have been the bright spots on the power-play with the pair scoring two extra man goals each. That puts the two in a tie for ninth in the nation in power-play goals.

Harvard comes into the weekend with just one game under its belt, a 5-1 win at conference rival Dartmouth. After finishing in a tie with Clarkson for first in the ECAC in 2014-2015, the Crimson dropped to fifth place in 2015-2016 and was picked to finish in the same spot in the preseason coach's poll. Sydney Daniels is the leading returning scorer for Harvard and already has three goals after a hat trick against the Big Green. After the graduation of Emerance Maschmeyer, Brianna Laing steps in as the starting goaltender and has a 19-2-1 career record in three seasons with a .941 save percentage and 1.41 goals against average.

Clarkson has an all-time record of just 10-18-4 against Harvard, but is on a five-game unbeaten streak against the Crimson. The two teams played to a 0-0 tie in Cambridge last year before Clarkson earned a 5-2 win in the return leg. Loren Gabel, McGill, Jacobson, and Genevieve Bannon all had goals in the win with Bannon, Harmon, Mercer, McGill, and Lauren Lefler also adding assists. Shea Tiley has started four games in goal against Harvard and has a 2-0-2 record with a 0.96 goals against average and a 0.96 save percentage.

Dartmouth is still looking for its first win of the season after a 3-0 loss against Northeastern and then a 5-1 loss to Harvard. The Big Green finished in tenth place in the ECAC in 2015-16 and was picked to finish tenth in the preseason coach's poll. It was the first time that Dartmouth missed the conference playoffs since 2010. Dartmouth returns just one of its top four scorers, in Kennedy Ottenbreit who racked up 20 points in her junior season. Robyn Chemago does return for her senior season with a 19-37-5 career record in goal.

Clarkson leads the all-time series against Dartmouth 16-10-5 and is unbeaten against Dartmouth since consecutive losses in the 2011 ECAC Quarterfinals. In the 14 games since, Clarkson is 12-0-2 and has outscored Dartmouth 43-9 and has shut out the Big Green eight times. Last season, the two teams tied 3-3 before Clarkson took a 1-0 home win. Gabel scored the game-winning goal in the 1-0 win while Harmon, Bannon, and Mercer all scored in the 3-3 tie. Overall, Bannon leads the way with 12 points in 10 career games against Dartmouth with Mercer tallying eight of her own. Tiley is 5-0-1 in six career starts against Dartmouth and owns an 0.82 goals against average and 0.96 save percentage.
