Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Knights' Streak Comes to an End with Overtime Loss to Colgate

A lengthy unbeaten streak came to an end for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team on Friday evening as fifth-ranked Colgate rallied for a 4-3 overtime triumph at Cheel Arena in the ECAC Hockey opener for both teams.

Defending National Champions, the Golden Knights lost for the first time since January 20 as their unbeaten streak ended at 24 games (22-0-2). Clarkson, which is ranked second in the country, stands at 7-1-1 and will host ninth-ranked Cornell on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Trailing 3-2 after 40 minutes, Colgate rallied with pair of power-play goals to pull out the big win on the road, improving its record to 7-0-0.

Just 82 seconds into the third period, Colgate's Malia Schneider picked up her own rebound and knocked in her fifth goal of the season to make it 3-3. The Raiders, who outshot the Knights 12-5 in the third, drew a penalty with three seconds left in regulation to take a power-play opportunity into overtime.

At 1:18 of the extra session, Megan Sullivan found a loose puck at the side of the crease and fired a shot into a wide-open net for the game-winner on the power play.

In a back-and-forth contest, Colgate edged the Knights in shots, 26-25 with the game-winning shot being the difference. Both teams were productive on the power play, with the Raiders going 3-of-6 and the Knights 2-of-3 on the man advantage.

Clarkson held a 2-1 first-period lead as junior Loren Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) scored both the Knights' goals in the opening stanza.

The Green and Gold got on the scoreboard first after a video review. At 10:52, Gabel took a nice feed in front from linemate, freshman Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) and got off a quick shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and fell in for a power-play goal. Sophomore defenseman Ella Shelton (Ingersol, ONT) also assisted.

The Raiders came back two minutes later when Bailey Larson fired a shot from the bottom of the left circle that deflected off Clarkson netminder Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) and fell behind her over the goal line.

Gabel connected again with 1:28 remaining in the period. Gabel block a Colgate shot at the blueline, picked up the loose puck and scored on a mini breakaway off a low shot to give Clarkson the one-goal advantage heading into the first intermission.

The Knights and Raiders traded power-play goals in the second period for a 3-2 score after 40 minutes.

Colgate made it 2-2 on Annika Zalewski's tally in front at 6:24.

Junior Cassidy Vinkle (Belleville, ONT) put the Knights back on top at 16:15. The assistant captain took a pass from junior defenseman Josiane Pozzebon (Bourget, ONT) at the top of the left circle, stickhandled around a Raider defenseman and slipped in a low wrist shot through the five-hole of the Colgate goaltender for her second score of the season.

Tiley made 22 saves, while Colgate's Julia Vandyk also posted 22 saves to record the victory.
