CU Volleyball Splits Opener of Puget Sound Premiere

Tacoma, WA – Back on the west coast for the first time in several years, the Clarkson University Volleyball team came away with a split in its opening two matches of the season, gaining a 3-1 win over St. Benedict in the afternoon, but falling in three straight sets to St. Thomas (MN) later in the evening at the Puget Sound Premiere.

In the opener against Saint Benedict, the Knights and Blazers traded points for most of the set before it appeared Clarkson was going to come away with a narrow victory. Down by two points, Kate Isaksen recorded two straight aces to put the Knights up 24-23. However, St. Benedict rattled off three straight for the come-from-behind win, 27-25. The second set was more of the same as the teams traded points for the first 30 tallies. However, Clarkson recorded five of the next six points, capped off by an ace from Rachael Aird, to give the Knights a comfortable four-point advantage, a margin they would maintain for a second-set win 25-21.

The Blazers again kept pace with the Knights in the third set, and enjoyed a three-point lead (15-12) midway through the set. However, Clarkson combined some kills with some St. Benedict miscues to score seven of the next eight points, with a Maddie Bredehoeft pushing the Knights' advantage to three (19-16). Clarkson would never trail again and held on for a modest two-point win (25-23). The fourth set was all in favor of the Green and Gold, as Clarkson raced out to a 16-3 advantage and just coasted to a 25-15 win.

Aird finished with 17 kills against six errors in 31 attempts, adding in four service aces. Bredehoeft chipped in 13 kills with a .257 hitting percentage and Kendall Cheval also reached double figures in kills with 10. Rachel Reusch added in nine kills and five blocks, including three solo efforts. Jillian Saenz led the offense with 56 assists and Kate Isaksen produced 39 digs and a pair of aces. For the Blazers, Hunter Weiss was the only player to reach double figures in kills with 17, while Madison Weiss added eight kills and five total blocks (one solo). Haley LaValley had 15 digs, Liz Schultz produced 14 digs, and Megan Pekarek had 38 assists and 13 digs.

More than six hours after dispatching St. Benedict, the Golden Knights could not overcome their second Minnesota match up of the day. St. Thomas handled Clarkson in the first set 25-12, and the Tommies raced out to a 10-2 edge in the second set before Clarkson made its way back into the game late, cutting the deficit to two (21-19), closing in on a kill from Rachel Reusch. That little bit of momentum wasn't enough to get the Knights all the way back, as St. Thomas took a timeout and rattled off three straight points to put things out of reach.

Set number three looked like it would go the way of the Knights as they took an early lead and extended the advantage to five at the midway point of the set (15-10). However, St. Thomas scored 12 of the next 13 points to whip things around to their advantage, and again the Tommies had enough to close the set out by a comfortable margin.

Reusch finished with a team-best eight kills, hitting .462 (8-2-13) while Aird and Bredehoeft each recorded seven kills. Saenz had 25 assists and both Isaksen and Meghan Edmund reached double figures in digs, producing 17 and 11, respectively. For St. Thomas, Ellie Etzell had 10 kills and Madie Kroehler recorded eight kills and a team-best 15 digs. Katharine Mallak had 23 assists and Hannah Schwartz tossed in 15 assists. The Tommies hit .371 (43-7-97 in the match.
