Knights Open with 5-1 Win in Minnesota

Junior center Michaela Pejzlova (Pardubice, Czech Republic) led a productive offensive showing by the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team with a two-goal effort to help the Golden Knights open defense of their National Title with a convincing 5-1 victory over Bemidji State in Minnesota on Friday night.

The Golden Knights and Beavers will close out the non-league series on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. EST contest at Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn.

Four different Knights scored in the season-opening victory and nine different Clarkson players recorded at least one point as the Green and Gold earned their 10th season-opening victory in the 16-year history of the program.

Graduate transfer, goaltender Kassidy Sauve (Whitby, ONT) made a big impression in her first appearance with the Knights after an all-star career at Ohio State. Sauve made 29 saves, allowing only a power-play goal, as Bemidji State held a 30-14 advantage in shots.

After a scoreless first period, Clarkson took control in the middle stanza, outscoring Bemidji State 3-1 in the frame to hold a two-goal lead through 40 minutes.

Senior Kelly Mariani (Mississauga, ONT) started things off with her 20th career goal, knocking in a pass from graduate transfer T.T. Cianfarano (Oswego, NY) at 6:07. Senior captain Cassidy Vinkle (Belleville, ONT) also assisted.  Pejzlova tallied her first of the night at 10:25 with linemate senior left wing Loren Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) and junior defenseman Taylor Turnquist (Blaine, MN) assisting.

The Beavers got on the scoreboard with a power-play marker by Paige Beebe at 12:57.

That was it for the home team, however, as the Knights close out the road win with three unanswered goals to stretch their winning streak to 11 games, dating back to February 10.

With under four minutes to play in the second frame, junior defenseman Ella Shelton (Ingersoll, ONT) connected on a passing play from Cianfarano and Mariani. For Cianfarano, who was named the 2016 ECAC Hockey Player of the Year in her sophomore year at Quinnipiac, the two assists tonight equaled her point total in last year's injury-shorten season with the Bobcats.

A pair of power-play goals in the third period by Pejzlova and Vinkle sealed the victory.

Pejzlova completed her fifth career, two-goal game, scoring her 39th career goal at 7:01 with Gabel and Shelton assisting.

Vinkle tallied her 20th career goal at 15:58 with defenseman, senior Josiane Pozzebon (Bourget, ONT) and Turnquist (Blaine, MN) assisting.

Clarkson was perfect on the power play, going 2-of-2 and killed off two of the Beavers' three man-advantage chances.
