Knights Fall On Two Second-Half Goals by Brewers

Potsdam, NY – Two goals midway through the second half by Vassar College sunk the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team's hope of a sweep this weekend as the Golden Knights dropped a 2-0 decision to Vassar in Liberty League action Friday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 3-6-2 overall and 1-3-2 in conference games while the Brewers moved to 7-4-1 and 2-2-1. Clarkson will play its final regular season home game of the 2021 campaign on Saturday when the team hosts Bard College.

The first half was relatively quiet as there was just one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes, and that was a pop up shot by Clarkson's Delaney Holohan that was easily grabbed by Vassar's goalkeeper Claire MacKenzie. The best scoring attempts of the half came from a good distance, as Vassar nearly curled one in off a corner kick and Chloe Hodge missed just high off a free kick from roughly 25 yards out.

Vassar broke through in the second half, once again producing some offense off a corner kick chance. In the 58th minute, a corner was headed by Riley Lipman and it appeared as if it was going to be picked up by Clarkson keeper Molly DiCaprio, but the ball kicked around a little in front and snuck past her when Skylar Herrera-Ross was able to just tip it over the line at 57:42.

With a little extra bounce in their step after the goal, the Brewers continued to put pressure on the Knights, but the second shot that found the back of the net came from outside of the 18-yard spot. Olivia Lavelle sent a pass square to Noelle Namba, and Namba took a step or two in and fired a hard shot with her left foot into the top left corner at 70:21. Clarkson played with urgency down the stretch and put pressure on Vassar's defense, but a few corner kicks and some possession deep in the Vassar defensive zone came up empty.

Vassar held a 13-5 edge in shots and also led in attempts on the frame at 5-1. The Brewers also held a small advantage in corner kick opportunities at 3-2. Molly DiCaprio made three saves for the Knights and Claire MacKenzie was called upon for one stop for the Brewers.
