Clarkson Opens North Country Classic with 4-0 Win Over New England

Potsdam, NY – For the second time in four days, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team dominated its opponent on offense with an overwhelming advantage in shots, as the Golden Knights picked up a 4-0 win over New England College in the first round of the North Country Classic Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-0-0 on the season while the Pilgrims fell to 0-2-0. Clarkson will take on Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday afternoon to close out the opening weekend.

Clarkson controlled play from the outset and challenged the Pilgrims' defense with numerous attempts on the frame, but it wasn't until the 23rd minute that the Knights broke through. On the left wing, Julia Cascone commanded a few defenders but was able to elude them all and send a pass back into the box, finding Sarah Kohls wide open in front where the junior converted to the far right side to put Clarkson up 1-0.

A few minutes later, Hannah Letourneau attempted to score from roughly 35 yards out but was denied by Emily Sashko of New England. The same strategy worked at the 41:13 mark, when Letourneau took advantage of the goalkeeper out of position, lofting a long shot over the defense's head for an unassisted goal.

Midway through the second half, the Knights picked up a pair of insurance goals. Late in the 65th minute Cascone picked up her second assist of the game when she found Tonia Kousmanidis in front for a 3-0 Clarkson lead. Less than 10 minutes later, Chloe Hodge sent a pass into the box where Rylee Marin settled the ball near the 18. With time to assess her options, Marin found Angelina Fahrenkrug, who ripped a shot to the right corner for the final tally of the contest.

Clarkson finished with a 34-3 edge in shots, including a 20-3 lead in shots on goal, and also had an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks. Molly DiCaprio stopped three shots for her second straight shutout, while Emily Sashko was busier as she was called upon to make 16 saves.
