Knights Suffer First Loss of 2021, Fall 2-0 to Stevens

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Molly DiCaprio was busier than in her first two outings making five saves on Saturday for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team, but her effort wasn't enough in a 2-0 defeat against Stevens Institute of Technology in the second game of the North Country Classic at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights suffered their first defeat of the season and moved to 2-1-0 on the year, while Stevens improved to 1-1-0. Clarkson heads to Babson College for a single game next weekend.

The Ducks controlled the play in the early going and were kept fresh by numerous substitutions in the opening half. One of those subs made an impact early on as Catalina Abusada had only been on the pitch for a few minutes when she scored at 18:45 to put Stevens up 1-0, thanks to a sharp pass from Amelia Rehrig. Two more substitutes combined to score an insurance goal late in the half when Madison Starr crossed a pass from the left side to Olivia Castro in front. Castro had time and picked her spot, going to the left side of the net with just 41 seconds left on the clock.

The two teams played somewhat more evenly in the second half as Clarkson notched both of its corner kicks and three shots in the final 45 minutes against Stevens five shots and one corner. Both squads were scoreless in the second half with legitimate scoring opportunities scarce than in the first period.

Stevens finished with a 13-5 edge in shots and a 7-2 lead in shots on goal while also holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kick chances. DiCaprio made five stops for the Knights in 90 minutes, while Stevens employed three goalkeepers overall. Izzy DiDario made one stop in the first half, and Zoe Hindman and Dana Perry split time in the second half, combining for one save.
