Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Golden Knights Advance to ECAC Semifinals with 4-1 Win Over Cornell

Potsdam, NY – With four unanswered goals over the final 35 minutes, the four-seeded Clarkson University Women's Hockey team came from behind to claim the ECAC Quarterfinals series against Cornell University, downing the Big Red in Game Three of the series, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked ninth in the nation in the latest USCHO.com poll, improved to 28-9-2 on the season and advance to the ECAC Semifinals, which will be hosted by Yale University next weekend in New Haven, CT. Cornell likely saw its season come to a close at 16-14-2.

Each team had a handful of chances in the early going of the first period, but best scoring chance of the opener came with about six minutes to go. Nicole Gosling took a shot from inside the blue line, with the puck rattling through traffic and getting deflected around, but the attempt was cleared by Cornell goaltender Deanna Fraser. A few minutes later another chance was had for the Knights as Gosling again had a shot from the top of the slot in a 3-on-3, only to see the attempt denied. Things quieted down for a few moments, but Cornell had a flurry of attempts with just over two minutes remaining, all which were set aside by Clarkson keeper Michelle Pasiechnyk. The Knights closed out the first 20 minutes with a 10-7 edge in shots on goal.

There was more action in the first few minutes of the second period than in the entirety of the first in regards to scoring chances. Clarkson had a handful of chances on an early power play, but just as the penalty was coming to its conclusion, Cornell broke out in the neutral zone for a 2-on-1. Izzy Daniel mishandled the puck, but her shot ended up bouncing off the pads of Pasiechnyk at 2:55 with assists going to Lily Delianedis and Alyssa Regalado.

Trailing for the first time in regulation all weekend, Clarkson responded quickly, scoring just two minutes later. In transition, Anne Cherkowski skated short of the blue line and sent a soft saucer pass through three Cornell defenders to find Gabrielle David, and the senior made three quick moves in front of Fraser to score the game-tying goal at 5:12. Brooke McQuigge also picked up an assist after gaining possession in the Knights' end and finding Cherkowski on the rush. The point by David was the 148th of her career, tying her for eighth all-time on Clarkson's leaderboard.

Clarkson took its first lead of the game at 15:29 mark. Jaden Bogden forced a turnover in the neutral zone and brought the puck into the offensive zone. Bogden passed the puck to Darcie Lappan behind the net, and Lappan skated a circle around the entire zone before sending a centering pass to Haley Winn. Winn's shot in front was initially stopped by Fraser, but the puck skipped up into the air and bounced off the back of Fraser's shoulder and into the net to put the Knights up 2-1.

At the start of the third, Clarkson had some opportunities but the shots couldn't beat Fraser. Midway through the period, the Knights found themselves down a player after a penalty, but Cornell was whistled for too many players to change Clarkson's prospects. The Green and Gold held on to the puck in the Cornell end, waiting for their extra skater, and the tactic paid off. Stephanie Markowski skated down on the left side and sent a pass back to Anne Cherkowski. She took a few steps in to wait for the appropriate screen, and her wrist shot beat Fraser stick side as the goaltender was peaking to the wrong side around the two players in front of her. It was Cherkowski's second point of the day, with assists going to Markowski and Haley Winn.

With a little over three minutes to go, Cornell took a timeout and pulled its goalie for an extra attacker, but just 45 seconds later the Knights ended up with an empty-net goal to put the game away. Sena Catterall picked up possession along the boards in the neutral zone and then was able to stop inside the blue line, sending one through the skates of a Cornell defender for a goal at 17:12.

Clarkson ended the game with a 33-22 edge in shots and went 1-for-2 on the power play. Pasiechnyk made 21 stops while Fraser denied 29 shots for Cornell.
