Breaking Down the Updated OT Formats and Point Structures
Fans watching ECAC Hockey contests may notice something new this season once the
the third period game clock hits zero and the teams on the ice are still tied. That’s because
3-on-3 overtime has come to college hockey. We’ve broken down how games will play out
in both the men’s and women’s league, as well as the implications on ECAC Hockey
league points.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Non-Conference Games
The new NCAA hockey rule mandating a five-minute, 3v3 overtime frame is applicable
to both men’s and women’s ice hockey. Therefore, the same scenarios written above
for men’s hockey also apply here. The only major difference is the implication
on Pairwise/RPI. Winners in overtime receive 66% of the RPI points, while losers receive
34%.
ECAC Hockey Conference Games
For those who are NOT fans of the shootout, we have good news. ECAC Hockey women’s
contests will not be utilizing shootouts to determine points. Games that end in a tie
after overtime will be just that, a tie. There will be a new point structure for the
women’s league this year, however, as 3v3 overtime winners AND losers will both be
awarded a share of the three points at stake.

A breakdown of the point structure is below:
— 3 points for a win in regulation
— 2 points for a win in overtime
— 1.5 points for a tie
— 1 point for a loss in overtime
— 0 points for a loss in regulation
