Potsdam, NY – On a night when the winter chill brought many hockey fans a smile, Clarkson was able to stay cool under the pressure of a late 5 on 3 Cornell power play and get their 11th ECAC win, and extend their point lead over the Big Red in the standings.
The first period was a strong start for the Knights as they held Cornell off the board and were able to gain a 10-5 shot advantage.
The Big Red carried a power play onto the fresh sheet of ice in the 2nd period, but the Knights got an early chance when
Anne Cherkowski got a breakaway but wasn't able to convert, but minutes later, Cherkowski was able to put the Knights in the lead with a rebound off of a
Gabrielle David shot. The goal was challenged by the Big Red, for too many players on the ice, but after the review, the goal stood.
The Knights would extend their lead on a beautiful passing sequence from
Stephanie Markowski and
Anne Cherkowski that landed on
Brooke McQuigge's stick and in the back of the net at 17:33.
The Knights would get an early penalty kill at the start of the 3rd period. Cornell would make it 2-1 at 9:31 when Gillis Frechette was able to slip a rebound under Pasiechnyk.
Clarkson would get a power play late in the 3rd, but then two Knights penalties negated the advantage and they wound up down 2 players for 34 seconds. The Knights would get the penalty killed and survive another minute plus of extra attacker time to get the 2-1 win.
Michelle Pasiechnyk would make 21 saves for her 17th win of the season.
Clarkson was 0 for 2 on the power play, while holding Cornell to no goals on 4 attempts.
